You mean DDB, right?

- sorry?doublespaced
- jmckinno0
Who cares?!?!
- Michael Tully cares. Or does he?doublespaced
- I'm not sure this was necessary, though. "Try coming up with your own ideas every once in a while, jerkies."doublespaced

So someone can copyright a plastic bag floating around in the wind? I wonder what Sam Mendes thinks of this... oh yeah, he doesn't give a shit either.
- It's an entire, conceptual, narrated film. If it were just a bag, then American Beauty was the first.doublespaced
- Yeah, I know. I didn't watch much of either of them to be honest.Raniator
- <Raniator
- sam mendes stole the idea from nathaniel dorsky, who stole from someone else...linearch
- but that's not the point....the movies are almost verbatum....complete riplinearch
- 74LEO0
Didnt they do this in american beauty like 10 years ago? Concepts and ideas are made then reworked redefined etc.
- linearch0
medes stole from dorsky, who in turn stole from something else....but that is not the point.....the entire concept of the movie was ripped....and sundance knew it.....and still let it in the competition....and yes...i meant DDB

Biggest fucking rip ive ever seen. im amazed at the cavalier responses in this thread.
Yeh in american beauty it was a 3 minute clip about how 'free' a plastic bag appears.
Werner Herzog's is a story about a bag, from a city centre to the floating trash island in the pacific.
The jeremy irons vid is a story about a bag, from a city centre to the floating trash island in the pacific.
its the same fucking concept, stolen, and filmed in a very similar way.
Such shameless ripping. Good post linearch!
- +1,000000...this isn't about a bag it's the whole articulation of the story...babaganush

this clear rip is in no way surprising is it, this is essentially how the advertising industry operates. The appropriation of an idea or of existing art to further brand recognition or message communication. For every one interesting Guinness ad there are 50 ripped of ideas out there.
You could spend all day taking adverts with apparent concepts and then digging out the original painting/film/animation/internet... etc etc to show where the 'idea' came from. Quick and obvious case in point:
OK Go promo:
Berocca Ad:
I'm not condoning the plastic bag rip, just pointing out how often it happens and one of the many reasons I've never liked advertising industry.
- your last 2 paragraphs are somewhat contradictory. If you dont condone it, then why say "you could spend all..Hombre_Lobo_2
- forget notes, im making a post?!?!Hombre_Lobo_2

wow yeah. blatant as fuck-all.
- MarleyMarl0
wha, wha, wha. has it negatively affected your life? are you struggling to sleep at night due to this? get over it and quit trying to play ad cop.
- i am going to copy all your work.bigtrick
- go ahead, i sure won't loose any sleep over, nor can i do anything about it.MarleyMarl
- lol bigtrick do it.Hombre_Lobo_2
- linearch0
marley. with 3 of my colleagues having films in sundance this year, the reputation of the festival is of concern to me....lose sleep? no. i think it's a big deal....and one that would want to be discussed with people in the creative field that could be affected by such condoning of plagiarism.
- at the end of the day you're not going to be able to do anything about it. nothing will change. spend your energy elsewhere.MarleyMarl
- add this to billion other rip threads. at the end of the day no one gives a shit aside from the person calling the rip.MarleyMarl
- nice attitude!linearch
- i'm just telling you like it is.MarleyMarl
- to each their own.....linearch

Rips do happen often, but do you suggest we just ignore them and allow / encourage this mentality? Thats just stupid.
These rips are blatant and need to be illuminated for the greater good of the industry.

i'm gonna tell my gramma

@Hombre_Lobo_2 to be honest I don't know what should be done about it. My position is I do not like the practice and and find the advertising industry at this level generally abhorrent.
But what I am saying is that this is generally how the industry works, the only thing they care about is the bottom line of profit and loss. I don't and never have seen the advertising world as a place to go to find original truly creative ideas. As I said before, For every one interesting Guinness ad there are 50 ripped of ideas out there. And if it's not a rip it's something with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
The majority of campaigns are boiled down to the lowest common denominator so they can sell to as many people as possible, because that's what it is - sales. It's horrible and as I say, I'm not sure what should be done about it.
- Hombre_Lobo_20
^i totally see what your saying dude.
What can the average designer do about it? hmm, not an easy question eh!
Part of me things you should just talk more of designers and and agencies that have integrity, and make it known the ones that do not. Spread the word of blatant rips and let the industry see them as the scum that they are.
but short of word of mouth among the industry, which the average consumer is not gonna to hear, id agree - what can you do.
I expect some laws to come into play soon enough (soon as in 15 years) about design ripping, intellectual property etc. as the creative industry gets bigger. Then again i can easily see that not happening and things being as they are now for a very long time.
Good chat old chap!
