I need a new TV and don't know anything about what's new. What are the 'must haves' in a TV these days and what can I get for under $500

my samsung pc monitor is solid, as is my 2 mates who have similar models.
My bros Samsung Tv is awesome, never had any probs.
Lot of TV price wars on in the UK, can get some cheap deals.
Saw a sony bravia 32" for £280 the other day!
Just so you know, if i remember rightly, Bravia TV's are among the best mainstream tv's (correct me if im wrong fellow geeks).

I'm gonna be stuck putting a tv above a fireplace, but we're renovating it to remove the current mantle and lowering it so it's not way up on the wall. I cringe when I see TV's at near ceiling height. Those people think they are so cool and it's just retarded.
- so is putting a tv above a heat source but whateverhonestly
- Actually, ambient heat is low in this building. we know people who live there and they say it doesn't get hot at all.mg33
- it doesn't get hot above a fireplace? heat doesn't rise there? what have you done to physics?honestly

If you have a darker room with controlled light, a (Panasonic) plasma will give you a great picture at a cheap price.
The only issue with plasma is the reflective screens (which they have improved). Don't buy into the hype about the burn issues. I've had a plasma for almost 7 years, and it has endured 1000s of hours of PS2 then Xbox 360 with zero burn-in issues. Its still my fav Tv in the house.
