bring the mask in from the edge a bit, like in after effects... if possible

dont you find after effects mask control great? i wish they had them in photoshop.

im not too sure projectile, have you tried using a shape layer?
failing that duplicate your vector mask twice, so you have 3
have 1 as the original back up (invisible but editable later)
have 1 as the feathered layer
turn one into a solid so you know that the feathered area sits withing the parameter of your previous vector mask.post some screenies for some more accurate advice!

see how far you can get with the refine edge contraction/shift thing. if not maybe play with feathering the inverted masks....
