Applying a feather to a vector mask is great.
But I only want to feather INSIDE the path that I've drawn.. otherwise I start getting the background bleeding in.
Solution: add a raster mask of the vector mask, then feather the vector mask.
But is there a way to have two vector masks or any other workarounds that keep the mask shape fully editable? ...and am I going about this the right way at all?

bring the mask in from the edge a bit, like in after effects... if possible

im not too sure projectile, have you tried using a shape layer?
failing that duplicate your vector mask twice, so you have 3
have 1 as the original back up (invisible but editable later)
have 1 as the feathered layer
turn one into a solid so you know that the feathered area sits withing the parameter of your previous vector mask.post some screenies for some more accurate advice!

see how far you can get with the refine edge contraction/shift thing. if not maybe play with feathering the inverted masks....
