DESIGNERS - I need a quick bit of advice.
Have you worked on a pitch before?
What level of work was it, was it free?I've been asked to do a pitch for something pretty cool but being a one man band, I can't work more than 1 day on it for free - with this in mind, it's probably going to be a load of very slick mood board style PDFs...ie nothing they can actually steal and use, but also leaving them with a sense of wanting to see more!
Does that sound OK?

Whenever I pitched without seeing money upfront, I got fucked.
Not sure how it works...You have to somehow lick their ass as much as possible and make absolutely sure that they liked you. That way they will give you the job.
If they like you, they might even use some idea that somebody else pitched to them. And get YOU to execute it.But if they don't like you, they will just use your ideas and give the job to somebody else.
- Exactly - that's why I don't want to give away too many ideas and prefer to pitch at a "mood board" level instead of tangeable concepts which can be ripped off.gingerbreadlady

Ask them to sign a contract saying that what ever you pitch or part of it will no way in shape or form be used if not selected.
- i would not sign such a contract- dont know anyone that would...bjladams
- Are you kidding me, this is standard practice. I'm not going to pitch you then have you turn to someone cheaper to do it w/o compensationsilentseven
- i am not kidding you. there is no way i'd sign a contract like that for a pitch only.bjladams
- It'd be your contract they were signing, bjl and it's a fairly common form of protection.detritus
- we use contracts when pitching - but dont see a "no way shape or form" clause flying. we copyright ideas with intentbjladams

Just prove your credibility and ability to solve there problem. don't give anything away. just show your understanding and how you would go about solving it.

What do these people do? Do they give their work away for free, in hopes of getting some paid work, without any sort of guarantee? No? Neither should you.

When someone is asking you to pitch, they are most likely asking others too. If you just "prove your credibility" and all that bs while others do actual work, then you are really wasting your time... Not gonna happen.
Motion companies do pitches all the time. Sure, they lose a shitload of money from them when they lose, but they make a shitload more in the long run than they could have if they didn't waste a little bit in the first place.
You have the chance to do something you say is "pretty cool," (meaning you'll probably have fun doing it,) and maybe you'll get to do more of that "pretty cool" stuff and paid for it... or you could do nothing, and receive nothing...
- True...I just can't spend more than a day doing it as I haven't got the time being a 1 man band with other clientsgingerbreadlady

I've only pitched for free in agencies, where I was getting a paycheck and the agency ate the cost.
As a freelancer, hell no.

show them your underwear at the very end and then walk out

On the first board just write "FUTURE". It gets them excited for whats to come. The next board write the names of a bunch of successful people and companies ( make sure Apple is bigger and underline Facebook). The final board should be an arrow with a dollar stapled at the end of the arrow. Take that board and point it at the clients face so they know that this idea will give them money ( make sure you remove the money and put it back in your pocket for later). Collect your fees, kid.

No one pitches for projects under 50K. Ask them up front about the scale of the project.
Motion studios and Ad agencies ptich for commercials that usually start at 250K.
