So does this actually affect anything? Article isn't clear...
"The global body in charge of allocating Internet addresses expects to hand out the final blocks of IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) addresses to regional registrars early next year, it said Monday.
Those allocations would mark a depletion at the global level of IPv4 addresses -- something that has been anticipated for years -- and put further pressure on network operators to switch to the newer IPv6 address system, which has massively more addresses available."

IP addresses get longer, that is all.
- says Mr Logical. It won't work like that though.VikingKingEleven
- Yes, it kind of will. They'll just look like this: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000...jasonistaken

I don't really understand how we got this far with a 12 digit number anyway. I own 9 of them.
- lol wutimsky
- 9 IP's, not 9 of the 12 digits that make up all of the worlds IPs. though that would be cool.mydo
- It's not a 12 digit number. It's a four byte address., or 32bit int.jasonistaken
- So, that is, each octet in dot-decimal notation has a possible value of only 0-255jasonistaken
- Or, only 4,294,967,296 possible values.jasonistaken
- If it were a 12 digit number, assuming 0 was valid in any space (an unique) there'd be 1 trillion possible combinations.jasonistaken
- Are you confusing IPs with domain names?Lillebo

Current status of IPv4 blocks:
http://arstechnica.com/web/news/…What will happen when we run out:
http://arstechnica.com/business/…From the above article: "Originally, the idea was that this upgrade would happen quietly in the background, but over the past few years, it has become clear that the change from the current Internet Protocol version 4, which is quickly running out of addresses, to the new version 6 will be quite a messy affair."
- good links thanks!HijoDMaite
- Exponential growth in India alone will probably hasten this messy affair.HijoDMaite

The important part to note is that's handing out IP blocks to large providers. The stats on how many unallocated IPs already held by providers are no included, and as far as I know, we're a long ways out from crisis if you factor that into the equation.
Not to mention, everything you've bought within the last 5 years (at least) supports IPv6.
