my wife lost one in NYC before we moved - fell out of her purse when gathering luggage after an interview. She borrowed a cell from a stranger at the airport to call me (probably helps she's an attractive girl and not a creepy guy).
1. told me the name of the hotel that called her a cab.
2. i called the hotel, got the name of the cab co.
3. called the cab company, told her she lost it, and asked if it had been reported.
4. the driver reported a lost iphone.
5. texted contact name and info of local friends coming to pick it up.
5. had local friends pick it up from the cab co.
6. iphone showed up in the mail in a week.do it. sooner than later.
- (that should read "car" company - not cab.... not sure how you pin down a specific cab.bulletfactory
- they keep track of what cab goes where..that's how the cab company gets a piece of the pie.dbloc

Same happened to me in NYC. Never saw that phone again. This was the original iPhone and the novelty of them were high at the time people in NYC were still standing in long lines to get them.
Fortunately for me my boss felt guilty about it since he stayed in the cab to get dropped off at another location and didn't answer his BB when I called him about it, so he paid for the replacement.

This happened to my girlfriend in NYC once before. Just dial your lost iphone from another phone and see if anyone picks up and meet up somewhere to retrieve your phone. Hopefully you get lucky. It worked like a charm for us.

I always fret this happening but somehow I have had iPhone 1 for like 4 years already , Putting the key lock will prevent people from dabbing into your info as the phone restores after 10 attempts, hope you at least had key lock .
- nobody uses thatraf

- I had no fucking key lock. I'm so pissed at myself. No precautions whatsoever.monospaced

So, it's been a couple of days, and still no phone. I had tried calling it when I began this thread, but it went straight to voicemail. I suspended service, but started it again a few times to make more attempts. Always straight to voicemail. The phone was fully charged when it was lost. I'm assuming the worst. No word back from the cab companies; no return attempts have been made.
Luckily my friend in LA has an old iPhone and is shipping it over to me to use for awhile. Weird part is, even though I feel naked without it, subway rides and elevators are almost intolerable, I'm starting to feel liberated.
- tell us you backed up at least, contacts,apps..etc. somethingBattleAxe

For all you iPhone 4 owners and mobile me subscribers, there is no excuse loosing your phone. Turn on the find my iPhone feature. Free for iphone4 users.

Mobile phone operators could easily help to track and weed out stolen phones. It's bad for their business though, they want stolen phones in circulation and you to get a new one

I could not live in a major city and not have some sort of phone tracking software setup... Not very smart.
