Big bulky design is in http://www.bestbuy.com/ .

It looks like a million other sites. So things are on the large size, big deal. Not everyone on the internet has the eyes of a 20 year old.
There's nothing about print design that requires or biases one to excessive size.

switchable background screams of a client that couldn't make their mind up over 3 options.

do you not think that we'll start to see more larger UI elements given the rise of mobile and touchscreen interfaces. Maybe the client had been sold the UI on the basis of iPads etc

What I find super annoying is the balance between the large and smaller type on the page. It makes me feel uneasy to jump between booking my flight and scrolling down to find other services. I do see a that these two areas do not work together in a cohesive manner.
I'm very bother to see that Delta thought I might need a way to scroll through bulky advertisements in the background, while I book an important business flight or a ticket to go see a poor sick mom. The extra interactive noise was indeed unnecessary.
- Bulky? A single image and line of text is bulky?i_monk
- don't forget the arrows to scroll, the 3 visually layered set of images and the many ads to go with.********

Just from a basic design standpoint it looks sloppy and poorly executed, I mean look at the humongous type on the left hand nav and the microscopic type everywhere else. The simplicity aspect makes it different but in reality it's probably not the best design for a page like this, it means hidden options for a lot of customers.
When you click through to another page the layout isn't consistent at all. In fact it seems like this page was just kind of slapped on top of the rest of the site.

Having said that I don't really get the print design thing, it's just bad design. Not the worst but shitty enough that it stands out for a major company like this.
