hey trooper
I have multiple sites on the same server, a couple of them run wordpress. The wordpresses are installed in different folders on the same root. then I pointed the domains to these folders, so for example pandopa.com points to peacehut.be/PANDOPA/ and weedjunk.com to peacehut.be/WDJNK/
problem is i can'tt declare my root URL in wordpress to be simply weedjunk.com or pandopa.com, because URL's generated by wordpress ( also for logging in for example) like weedjunk.com?p=577 don't work, so my direct URL's all look like this peacehut.be/WDJNK/?p=577
how do I get my sitepages to use their actual domain names, instead of always having to refer to the folders on the root ?
thanks !

- or if you want them as separate installs, you can use mod_rewrite and mod_alias, but the learning curve may be steep!acescence

I don't think that's really an SEO question, more like a server config question.

Do incoming links from different domains/ websites that live on the same server help a websites ranking?
- nosaj0
^ For example, if I had 100 hosted sites on the same server and they all linked to each other would there be a benefit to this?
- depends... anchor text is the key... also i think they gotta be on diff ips?dconstrukt

What's the best way to ensure pagerank is maintained when redesigning a site?
I'm implementing a new CMS and an entirely new design so the templates, IA, and in a lot of cases, the content are significantly different. The outgoing site has a pretty much perfect search rankings for its sector despite being table based and stuffed with keywords etc.

@srhadden probably best to talk to your host about that. you will need to install wordpress individually in each folder... althought doesnt WP3 support multiple domains? I'll have to check on that for you.
- i installed a separate wordpress in eachfoldersrhadden
- ok then edit the mysql database to reference the domain of choicetrooperbill

@nosaj They can help but their 'value' is decreased slightly unless theyre hosted with different class C IP's
- trooperbill0
^ also be careful you dont create a link farm
- trooperbill0
@zr the best way is to keep everything the same. But if thats not an option try to keep the URL structure the same at least and if possible copy across any text content to the new design.
sites with new navigation architecture will always spaz out when theyre re-indexed.
once the site is live use google webmaster tools to monitor for any dead links and 301 the dead files to relevant active pages

Why does my home page show up for a product name keyword instead of it's category page that has more related keywords and content? Is it because my page rank is better on the home page?
- dbloc0
how do you force the meta description to show up on a google search?
- mikotondria30
To what extent can Google interpret javascript ?
Say I have a load of links on my page, with great keyword destinations, like: mykeywordsite/keyword/relevant-k...
.BUT! - I use ajax to fetch the page content and reload it in my current page. Same page content as at the url, but no actual navigation goes on..
Will I get penalised for this, or will it be undetected, and I get the points for good juice on my other pages. ? In my xml sitemap that I submit, the other pages are show in the proper heirarchy etc, but when using the site in an actual browser, I just ajax all my content in. Hope that's clear.
- trooperbill0
@seed its probably due to the number of inbound links and the home page referencing the product which highlights this pages importance and relevancy for that term
- trooperbill0
@dbloc try adding the meta tag <meta name=”robots” content=”NOODP,NOYDIR” /> which tells Google not to use your DMOZ description (which i think is the case here) Google also has ahabit of showing an excerpt from the page if its more relevant for the search term so probably best to use analytics and find out what terms are being used to find your website and then tailor the description to include these phrases.
- trooperbill0
@mikotondria3 google isnt clever enough to view ajax type calls. its pretty much limited to following inline onclick style links and thats about it for now
- trooperbill0
^ just make sure that your on-site sitemap has links to the pages that are 'hidden' from google using ajax calls.

How important is the actual _physical_ location of a server in terms of search ranking, when a business' main clients are tied to a specific geographic location?
- trooperbill0
@lukus_W its pretty important as is the domain extension (if your using a .com or other 'global' tld you can set the target country in Google Webmaster Tools) but you really need the server to be hosted in that country too, if for no other reason that it makes its response rate faster
- lukus_W0
Thanks trooperbill - in this case, the domain ties up with the relevant geographic region, but server is in a different country.
I think I should discuss moving the server, but wasn't sure whether Google places a forfeit due to the IP address resolving to a different locality.
