Venice, without a doubt. Close to the ocean, 30min or less from downtown and hollywood, if you ever even want to go there.
Silverlake is nice, if you don't mind the hippest of the hip. I lived there for 2.5 yrs and by the end of my stay I was really fucking sick of seeing 'the scene' in every nook and cranny bar I liked.
Culver City is nice and affordable, close to lots of stuff but still on the westside so you're close to the water.
IMO, if you're gonna live in LA, you should live as close the water as you can so long as its not out of your price range, or too far from where your gig is.
- Taken on board. I think an old friend worked in Culver City; sounds familar...RW

I lived in Burbank 11 years, I now live in North Hollywood about a block form Burbank. Things I like about Burbank:
- Quiet
- Lots of studios/firms/visual crap places
- 5 mis from Hollywood
- In between the 5, 134, and near 101 (easy to downtown, etc)
- Very suburban (if u like that stuff)
- Near malls/theatres/shops/good grocery storesCons
- A police state (forget it if youre black/hispanic, which i am hispanic and my wife black)
- Not "hip/cool"
- No bars/clubs/ etcpeaze....

I really enjoyed living in SantaMonica/Venice, but if I were to move back, I'm not sure where I would go.
- what nice in santa monica also, is that you really don't need to use the a/c just open the windows. ocean breeze. :-)akrokdesign

Venice has amazing fresh air and an eclectic cultural vibe...but it's gotten really expensive recently...like so many other nabes with a decent cross section of people.
In your searching, don't sleep on Atwater Village. Still not on the radar of big money folks (although it's had/has its share of notable inhabitants...Grand Royal Records back in the day for example).
Portions of Echo Park might still be affordable.
But regardless of where you end up...affordability+proximity to anything desirable comes with a certain risk. In any city.
