Can anyone list some places in LA that are half decent and not too far from the strip (like 30 minute drive). A friend of a friend lives in Calabasas which seems nice enough if a little boring... I have no idea about this so any tips much appreciated...

what's your budget? and what size?
- downtown is pretty nice.akrok

- Can be any size, even a studio and it's to buy, not rent... I think LC and Silverlake might be a touch expensive. I can stretch to about $200,000RW
- to about $200,000RW
- i seen places in downtown for 350 - 400k.akrok
- maybe down to 300k.akrok
- could find a short sale.akrok
- downtown is up and coming also.akrok
- 300,000 is too much but I'll check out what's around DT anyway thxRW

get a nice furnished place for 3 months and you will more than know where to buy.
- Fair enough.. I've been swayed; makes sense to do thisRW

I live in Downtown LA in the Arts District, and I like it here. But it all depends on what your needs are. Also, your commute may be a big part of your decision since LA is a driving-only city.

Venice, without a doubt. Close to the ocean, 30min or less from downtown and hollywood, if you ever even want to go there.
Silverlake is nice, if you don't mind the hippest of the hip. I lived there for 2.5 yrs and by the end of my stay I was really fucking sick of seeing 'the scene' in every nook and cranny bar I liked.
Culver City is nice and affordable, close to lots of stuff but still on the westside so you're close to the water.
IMO, if you're gonna live in LA, you should live as close the water as you can so long as its not out of your price range, or too far from where your gig is.
- Taken on board. I think an old friend worked in Culver City; sounds familar...RW

I lived in Burbank 11 years, I now live in North Hollywood about a block form Burbank. Things I like about Burbank:
- Quiet
- Lots of studios/firms/visual crap places
- 5 mis from Hollywood
- In between the 5, 134, and near 101 (easy to downtown, etc)
- Very suburban (if u like that stuff)
- Near malls/theatres/shops/good grocery storesCons
- A police state (forget it if youre black/hispanic, which i am hispanic and my wife black)
- Not "hip/cool"
- No bars/clubs/ etcpeaze....
