I got the call from management. They want iPad at trade shows. Real bad.
They want flash work we have done running on it.
They say to me: figure it out.
Has anyone successfully done this? For narrative content we can export to video, but I have heard about conversions that also handle interactivity with javascript or something.....
damn you Steve Jobs.

well, um, i know i can use google....thanks. but geez, being in a forum like this where there are many who supposedly know about these things, I thought I could get a little advice.
Like has anyone tried it? Does it work?
- again... i wasn't being a smart ass... i was giving you the keyword to find the info you need... there's lots out therePonyBoy
- Yes, Jailbreak is required.********

well i have heard about actual conversions of flash to some other code...not sure Jailbreak is what I want to do...but maybe

Ask these folks, they do it somehow >

Wow, thanks fyoucher1!
I talked to someone there and they said that they are the only people who can do this. they apparently have a brilliant CTO who had done some code wizardry to enable this to happen, mostly with ads, but my full screen content is something that intrigued. them. Waiting for a guy to call me back, We will see what happens.

I haven't heard of any good way to do it...sure there are little demos here and there but its mostly super simple banner ad stuff.

I still don't know what the story with this is yet, but it may be worth reaching out to these guys?

Theres other considerations too
-Optimizing for touch UI
-Optimizing for less powerful processorHonestly your boss just isn't being realistic. If a solution existed (beyond recreating some pretty basic banner ads like in the example dMullins posted) don't you think we'd be seeing it somewhere?

When people say they've converted something Flash-based to iPad what they probably mean to say is, "there was a rebuild/redesign step where we recreated xyz FOR the iPad." There's no true 1-to-1 conversion at this time that I've seen.

Well I think the Smokescreen thing you posted is sort of automatic. It actually interprets the SWF in real time using JS. But you'll notice the examples they have are extremely limited and don't really involve much interactivity.
My guess would be they are working though those issues but that it's far from being able to translate even reasonably complex Flash files.

if you have a developer account. cant you just publish for ipad/iphone from adobe and put it on your device. Since you are not putting it up on the app store no apple approval needed. Am I wrong about this?
- yep - you can export from flash and it use it on your own phone, just not in the app storejpea

Hey man we just did something similar recently. Exact same situation, needde all the Flash contenet of a client for a trade show running on iPdas.
We just used video exports of the Flash, thankfully most of the stuff we used was quite linear- you still have to know objective C and the iPhone SDK thoughAncillary

Just tell them Flash is dead, that's what I've heard ;-)
Seriously, though, just tell them they need to buy the Samsung pad, or one of the surely billion others soon to be out (and don't forget to mention that they'll be less expensive, won't require any expensive overhaul of existing stuff, etc., etc.).
Side note: this is the crap that will be causing a big stir up, thanks to Apple's lack of Flash support. This will be costing the interactive industry a ton of money. Woohoo for Apple.

twokids,
You can use Flash CS5 to export for iPad with their iphone packager. I was involved with the prerelease and I've built stuff with it so I know it does work.
What you need to do is provision your ipads with certificates so you can install apps on them without going through app store (this will require you to pay Apple $99 for developer license).
You should be able to port your Flash stuff that way. That's for good news.
The bad news is that you can't just port it. There are numerous issues with performance and animations and videos when running on iPhone/iPad. You have to use cacheAsBitmap on your clips and be careful how you use them so they are rendered on iPad or iPhone with hardware acceleration. If you don't do it properly the performance is absolutely awful. Of course, you will need to make all buttons and iPad UI stuff yourself as Flash doesn't have really controls and SDK stuff from Apple. Same goes with touch interaction. You will have to code it yourself.
If you do it right though, it's great. I've built a full interactive application for iphone with tweens and live video and all kinds of goodies and it worked fine and pretty fast but it's not as simple as just export from Flash to iPad and don't worry about it.

what is the point ? you are forcing functionality on to a platform that does not support it , and to show what that you can hack flash onto ipad for all your clients?
- twokids0
BattleAxe: I agree with you, but, see...this is a massive cultural issue. The iPad is a cultural force and Events people, who are always interested in making clients feel that we are cool, and who don't know anything about technology, want iPads to show our work on. They don't care about the issues - they just want it. That is what is happening these days.
This all makes me realize that the REAL reason that Steve Jobs did not want Flash on the iPad is that the iPad platform is NOT a personal computer, not as powerful, and thus, it will likely not work well. So if people try to run Flash, unsuccessfully on the iPad, or badly, it makes the IPAD look bad, not flash. It was a defensive move, really. Jobs wanted the iPad to succeed, and having Flash fail on it a lot could make it look bad, instead of incredible, which is what is happening.
interesting times.
