The problem is that we often reinforce the stereotype.

I do love the "Rockstar" requirement I keep hearing about.... you should show up massively hungover, wearing a ripped T-shirt and dirty jeans, smelling like you've been on tour with Motorhead for months, complete with lots of illegal substances stuffed in your pockets and a few guitar strings poking out of holes in your pants pockets...

I think they band together and prank everyone. I seem to go in monthly cycles of everyone raping my email telling me they have a great position available for a *insert position I am neither qualified nor excited about* and they want me to get in touch with them.
This month I've mostly been deleting .NET Developer positions. Last month was iPhone Apps. I am a UI/Graphic designer for web.

It sucks. I signed up for each of the main recruiters with a separate email (just throwing .'s in my normal email) to keep track. The one I gave to Monster ended up being passed around to about 15 other recruiters/agencies. It's great when you want a job, but when you've got one you're then on loads of separate mailing lists you have to unsubscribe from...

i have one that emails me all the time. (cc) but their rate are so low, it's hilarious. well, okay if i was fresh out of school. yes.
other ones are pretty quite. they do make a lot of noise in the beginning.

good luck
still have only 1, 3 day gig booked from a recruiter after being with 5 different ones for 3 yrs.

recruiters suck. they don't respect what you're actually looking for.
me: "I want an animation role where I will do no banner work."
recruiter: "We have the perfect agency for you, here is their portfolio."
me: *looking at massive amounts of banner work* FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCC....

I was placed twice by recruiters, but it was a loooooong time ago... like late 1990's..... both times a very good match, and the second time they got more $$ than I would have if I negotiated on my own....

"I can't put you forward if you don't have that highly skilled migrant visa in your hand"
- maikel0
I think the guru thing refers to the fact that you should be able to metaphorically (or not quite) walk on bloody nails, and being able to spend a few months without eating...

where do you look for curative recruiters?
- joshtrix0
Anyone get recruiters trying to get you to do their job for them?
ie. "I have this role, I know you're not a programmer, but do you have any friends that I could put forward"
