Suggestions on a set up?
Shooting people / portraits with natural lighting.
How strong of a strobe etc?
- bored2death0
a strobe is natural lighting?
- ********0
Most of the lighting will be natural but I feel like there is a need for a strobe.

Well, what's your style, or desired end result? Are you shooting as an artist (lighting is totally your call) or some super clean headshot stuff?
For headshots and general work stuff, I use a 750 watt strobe and soft-box (24 X 32 or 36 X 48) 90% of the time.
For everything else I shoot available light or unconventional stuff like fluorescent tubes or outdoor work lights.

What are you thoughts on ring flash? I know its overly used but it tends to be decent as fill light.
I used 50mm with right and now I am thinking 85 with ring. Too far?
- ring flash cool for fill light, 2 stops less than main, so you can push your sidelight without harsh front shadowsvaxorcist
- right light as main light can be cool, if subject close to wall, doughnut shadow, or move 3 feet away from wallvaxorcist
- 50 or 85 both good, but note that ring light loses power with distance, so slower recyclevaxorcist
- three kinds of ring flash... expensive high-power, and cheap low-pwer, and homemade low-power fun....vaxorcist

JSK: I have an earlier version of this: http://www.calumetphoto.com/item…
I can control the flash output. Since it's the only strobe I own, I didn't wanna' be underpowered. Also, between the soft-box and exposure settings on the camera, I'm good to go.I love overhead lighting... when you can rig it. That shot is beautiful.

to be honest, I personally don't like ring flash...

Never used a ring flash. But, I think it's all a matter of taste, and everything works if you work it (friend's words).
From your posts in other threads, I think you know your photography. Rent some stuff and have at it.

I am used to just shooting with out any strobe. If I was to use some light source, I would use hand handle flash.
Last time I used a strobe, I blew all the fuse and everything overblown as I have said. I really need to learn more on lighting set up.

jsk, are you using aperture or photoshop?
- Lightroom but only for archive.********

If you are renting or have a decent budget, I'd say a 2-3 strobe setup (left/rear/right) combined with a soft box hotlight over you as the photographer would be prime. Calumet has a great strobe setup. Buy in person to make sure you have everything you need that is compatible with your body and hotshoe setup.Kit:

http://www.calumetphoto.com/item…Sandbags are a nice to have too so dorks don't knock over your lights. The less cables the better, but the strobes can be tethered with a strobe cable directly to the commander on your camera.
If you're in a hurry and on a budget, I use 3 Nikon SB 900's combined with a hotshoe Nikon NB commander. You can rent em for about $15 each a day.

do it outdoors like the pros
- vaxorcist0
Outdoors an hour before dusk, bastard amber filters over sidelight flash balanced with daylight, you can use CTR-301p remote flash triggers from ebay, old Sunpak 433/422/333 flashes set on 1/4 or 1/8th power... and one umbrella on a clamp/stand behind you on the side, one flash behind subject left, one behind right, possibly a gobo or two, very strobist style for about the price of one monolight.... you can use home depot A clamps to hold your backlight flashes and black foamcore as gobos....
none of this may make much sense unless you spend lots of time at www.strobist.com.... and/or read Lighting Science and Magic...
or just use a bunch of speedotron stuff in a studio....
it's less about the brand of gear than where it is and how you balance with the ambient.... have fun and practice a LOT
