The patent states that “sensitive information” could be erased from the device if the presence of an unauthorised user is detected.
Last month, the US Government ruled that ‘jailbreaking’ -- hacking a phone to run on any network and any software -- was legal.

Actually, let's get this straight right now, from the patent text:
"In some embodiments, the owner of the electronic device can be notified of the unauthorized user by sending an alert notification through any suitable medium...."
The "unauthorized user" is not the device owner. This is anti-theft, not anti-jailbreak. EFF is clearly wrong.

Do people need to be reminded that apple is still a small market share of the world. What makes it different is that it's actually able to make a lot more money selling to a smaller market. By far, it is no Microsoft monopoly or a Google. It's like listening to people complain about their Rolex watches or their newly purchased Porsches.

EFF goes crazy on Apple every now and then, they're probably trying to tap Apple haters for donation dollars and cheap publicity like Greenpeace did.
Their whole overheated response hinges on the definition of "unauthorized user" and a complete misunderstanding of what a patent is.

Shouldnt it be optional?

What are you talking about Lukus? Not so long ago, on the brink of the crisis they were one of very few companies with 13 billion dollars reserve, now they have over 40.
They have a few extremely popular, industry leading products which other companies keep trying to follow. What people seem to forget, they most of all have the best operating system for personal computers.
- ukit0
What have they become exactly? Like I said I'm still not clear on what makes them so bad...
Maybe some people feel "betrayed" by their commercials but last time I checked they still made the best computers and smart phones, thats good enough for me.

Apple are on the decline. How can anyone seriously support what they've become?
- No, they are making lots of money.
georgesIII - If that is decline I would love to see success:)ukit
- They're making money - but people used to love them.. that love isn't going to last.lukus_W
- It is not healthy to love a company, so perhaps it is all good.raf
- actually more people are hating Apple because a lot of people are starting to love iternexbcn
- No, they are making lots of money.

The whole story reminded me of this one
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/0…
"he case of the Lower Merion School District spying on its students with covert laptop webcam software. The school district of the affluent Philadelphia suburb issued mandatory laptops to its students, each one loaded with software that could covertly activate the laptops' webcams, supposedly as a security measure to help recover stolen laptops). Students were required to carry and use the laptops, forbidden from using their own computers in school, and prohibited from modifying the software on their machines."

I did prefer it when my iSight had a little shutter that I could physically block the lens off with - I don't like the thought that some hacker or whoever can be logging into a camera on my iMac and watching whatever I may be doing however mundane that may be.

isn't about security matters, or Orwell in the farm...
IS ABOUT MONEY. Patents are about this.

eh, I figure as long as you're not doing anything illegal, why would you be concerned? Go ahead photograph me, track me, listen in. I'm not doing anything sketchy.

The Google wifi case is actually pretty interesting. It will be tried as a class action lawsuit in CA

"and even drove around the country illegally recording data gathered from unsecured wifi networks, I wonder how much of a shit fit some of you guys would throw?
Oh wait, that was..."I have an iPod touch and my home connection is on a DSL dialup with a dynamic IP, changing every so often.
When I click the "my location" button on google maps, the pin drops right in front of my house. How is it doing this? Is the IP data from internet provider so accurate? I kind of doubt it.

OK fine...I guess I just don't understand why people even care about the "hypocrisy" of their ads or slogans. Who cares?
Guess what, I put on some Nikes and I couldn't "just do it." ZOMG
Personally I care more about real world effects. Call me crazy...:D
- Nah, you're far from crazy,
I just hope you'll never become as cynical as me :)georgesIII

The only thing is that Apple runs on denigrating other companies,
look at the "I'm a mac" campaign,
these past 10 years, they went from think different to "we own your hardware"Google on the other part was projected to become like it is right now,
I remember 2 or 3 years ago, I would say google is becoming evil and most people will tell me, I'm a conspiracy theorist, to put my tinfoil hat on, lol illuminati, etc,I'm not really amazed google is taking this turn, I'm more sad apple is slowly going but steadily going the same way too.
If you can spend your time defending apple while criticizing the other corporations while thinking that apple is different, you've been sold the wrong pill.
- @ ukitgeorgesIII
- Google's mantra's still "don't be evil"ernexbcn
- I know right,
yet I was criticized more than once for saying it is completely falsegeorgesIII
