How would I know if my video card was dead?
I assume this is my problem, but not sure.My PC laptop started getting strange colors and lines on the screen, and shut down when it got too hot. It's about 7 years old now but I'm hesitant to retire it because sometimes it will be completely fine.
It's a Toshiba Satellite which are notorious for overheating, so I recently cleaned out the heat-sink and fan and applied some fresh thermal paste and stuff. Not noticing much difference though, still gets super hot to touch on the bottom.
Any ideas would be appreciated...

Could be dust in your (what are presumably) vga connectors on both ends - swab them down with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

whatever the problem is, start shopping for a new laptop. You can't get a replacement anything for a 7 year old laptop.

probably the video card.
Happened to my vaio - except all at once. BAM screen full of crazy colors.
Luckily it has the intel graphics chip...just switch to that and kept ticking.
tl;dr; its the video card or something else overheating and effecting the video card
