1. Do you folks know whether you can install an ipad app without the need to go though the apple apps store?
2. Is it at all possible to create an ipad app without permission from apple?
3. Is there a list of criteria that an ipad app must meet in order to be distributed through the app store?
Thanks

No. No. Yes.
(you can jailbreak, but you can't count that your users will have done the same)

So I take it that you wont be able update an app without going through the app store?

re. 2 -> afaik, you still need their SDK and to agree to TOS. But I was being a bit pedantic when I answered no.
True, you would still need the SDK and ToS but I think the question is more around distribution. Also, you can work with out the SDK, from my understanding. My thought was that you can by pass the apple approval process for app dev.

Why would you want to not go through the app store and limit your exposure?

Not through App Store because it indexes what ever you installed. The loop hole would to have your app hit the server to check for update and notify the user but I dont think you can over the air.

I am sorry, I should have said YES to 1.
Since it is legal to jail break your ipad, yes you can install apps on there with out going through the app store.
I misread as it, if people (majority) would know how to do that as consumption.

Re: 3;
Actually, Apple don't _publish_ a criteria. Even though a list must exist, you won't know what it is .. you just have to hope.
- JSK0
Maybe for content but I would think that there is a publish guidelines.
I recall one of them being that the app can no duplicate the native app function.

1. Yes: http://spiritjb.com/
2. Yes, using third party .p12 certificates
3. Yes, not doing #1 and #2 are on that list

what if you only wanted to roll an app out for a specific company... as opposed to the masses?

So if you want Limited Multiple users of an app you have created which can be updated regularly, and avoids any involvement through apple, the ipads must be Jailbreaked?

there are 2 types of distribution that Apple allow:
1. AppStore - the standard method you are probably familiar with (submit app, app is approved and available to download through appstore)2. AdHoc - this allows you to distribute to limited multiple users outside of the AppStore. You'd need all the device unique ID codes though and it's limited to 100 devices.

Just found this:
"In-house Distribution -
Deploy proprietary, in-house applications to authorized users in your company, the iPhone Developer Enterprise Program is available to companies with 500 or more employees and a Dun & Bradstreet number."

1 Yes. You can create an Distribution Certificate for in-house deployment. This is what we did at my company. Our app is for monitoring our internal systems, plus some GPS functions.
2 Yes. We did not have to have our internal app approved by apple before deploying it.
3 Yes, you will need to read Apple App submission guidelines.

Lots of people I know the first thing they do is Jail Break and check out the indie apps . I will do this shortly and check it out too , I did it with my iphone and it was easy to Restore and go back to Native apps and App Store
Apple sure has a good Racket going , Imagine Having to buy Desktop apps Directly from Apple or Microsoft , same principal , it is a Device that one owns no?
Either way lots of people are putting stuff out and that is overall a great thing .
