I bought a new i7 Quad core imac for home last Spring and maxed it out with 16Gb Ram, and a SSD. It runs really good with all I've done on it so far... lots of AE/FinalCut HD work. A little 3d, and all the CS... Obviously not as fast as a MacPro, but the thing the worries me most is how hot it gets. There is hardly an air vent on the back, and the shit will burn your hand after using for an hour. I'm sure this effects render times. It makes me nervous to the point were if I needed to depend on a home computer more for work, I'd probably get another MacPro. I love the space it saves though, and the all in one monitor.
- The heat issue has been the one thing keeping me from getting the iMac.Continuity
- i suppose i could install smcFanControl and boost fan speeds, but shouldn't need to.Douglas

If they discontinue the 30" display, they'll be available discounted as refurbs - this is prolly the best news. They're one of the most satisfying Apple products ever.

I just realized that if you hooked a mac mini up to your tv, the trackpad would make an awesome remote.

anyone got a spare $10,000?

c'mon. I've waited 10 mins. Nobody has a spare 10k in change?

Amazes me how over powered people think their machines need to be.
Fair enough if you do 3d or video work. But when a print designer (working mainly in a4/a3) or web developer buys a 16gb ram iMac, it's a collosal waste of money.
I have a 3 gig dual core laptop and do a4 print docs and AE video work, and it goes ok. Not super fast but enough.
I have no idea why anyone would buy that trackpad for a desktop machine.
- i'd say that track pad is actually a smart idea. it work like a charm and way better than magic mouse.pango

Seconded! Print/web designers on Mac Pros are hilarious, what a fucking waste of money. I mean does Photoshop even use more than 1 core yet? If you've got money to burn then buy an SSD drive, that will make Photoshop faster on a dual core than on a 12 core machine because thats where the bottle neck is.
- yeh man!
fair enough if you're doing A0 complex PS docs, but thats very rare. SSD would be sweetHombre_Lobo

I shared an office with a guy who would always say "I dont know how you can do any work on that little machine (meaning my 13" MbPro/24" monitor), I dont know what I'd do without my 15" macbook (his first generation/4 yr old Macbook)". Most Apple machines can handle anything today unless you're doing video or working with huge photoshop files.

It's no secret they're fucking slaves to marketing and hipster bullshit word of mouth. 16GB RAM... seriously.
I do AE on a 20" iMac with 4GB RAM.... it's not smoking fast, but still does the job.

I used to say this but I am sick with how slow Lightroom is on my computer.

I have handled big ass concert stage visuals in realtime with 2 live camera inputs and distributed to 3 different LED screens from a single mac book pro, not a problem.
I haven't owned a desktop computer since the G4 Quicksilver, but next purchase will be most likely an iMac.
People always get like that about cameras too, just look at the threads here where people ask things like:
Hey guys, I'm new to photography (I had a disposable camera, but I think I left it at the hotel, cause I couldn't find it). I would love to buy a new point and shoot so I can have in my pocket and shoot photos of my new dog, so my grand parents can see them. What would you recommend?
You are guaranteed for people to say, well I won't press any shutter button unless is one of these

Those imacs are more than enough to do motion graphics.
I all do it from my macbook pro now and that does the trick.
But in the end everybody wants the Macpro because its a dicksizing contest.
