Maybe this is more plausible
http://www.mindfully.org/GE/2008…
"Genetically modified seeds are produced and distributed by powerful biotech conglomerates. The latter manipulate government agricultural policy with a view to supporting their agenda of dominance in the agricultural industry. American conglomerates such as Monsanto, Pioneer HiBred and others, have created seeds that reproduce only under certain conditions, often linked to the use of their own brands of fertilizer and/or insecticide.
The genetic modification of the plant leads to the concurrent genetic modification of the flower pollen. When the flower pollen becomes genetically modified or sterile, the bees will potentially go malnourished and die of illness due to the lack of nutrients and the interruption of the digestive capacity of what they feed on through the summer and over the winter hibernation process."

I was about to write "Monsanto will come up with something to save us all".

If that isn't greed at its most craven I dunno what is

at the rate the USA's unemployment is rising we could all chip in and get some yellow and black spandex suits made up and get some of those bastards doing the heavy lifting instead of the more traditional bees. job still gets done and we've given some people a purpose. perfect.

but if bees die off crops don't get pollinated. There have been studies estimating the economic impact of bees and the issues with them dying off are being taken very seriously by governments
------I like bees, but I'm not sure I believe those studies. Bill Oddie has led me to believe that Bees are not indigenous to Britain, and that the Romans are responsible for their introduction. People were living here LONG before the Romans arrived with the Bees, and that leads me to believe that humans were not starving to death in their absence.
I call bullshit on this theory.
- they weren't living there in such numbers nor with the expectations they now have.airey
- so although i agree it may be crap, you're actual line of thought is most definitely crap also.airey
- My line is that we wont all die if bees die out. I'm right.********
- no, you're right there. unless we discover the universe is run by the bees.airey
- then we are fucked.airey

Moth, as far as I understood it, the Romans mainstreamed Bee keeping (domestication) as a way to make money as opposed to introducing bees to the UK

i read an article about a year ago, i think in the economist, which was saying that in 10 years or so, honey will be more expensive and exclusive than beluga caviar ...
i really like bees, i hope they dont die out. i love the fact they die if they sting you, its such a 'for the hive' kamikaze way they evolved. i love the fact they get 'drunk' and sometimes get 'bounced' from their hive.
ok, put down your cellphones people!

let's bee serious for a moment guys

as a beekeeper myself i've seen how destructive things like colony collapse disorder can be. the cellphone research is interesting for sure but really if you want to help solve this problem AND still use your phones go your nearest farmers market and buy local produce and honey. when bees get trucked back and forth the county to pollinate your food it's not good for them. keeping it local helps the bees avoid the hundreds of pesticides they are exposed to through this type of commercial beekeeping. if you want to take it even farther then learn how to keep bees yourself, it's not hard and one hive can easily fit into your yard or rooftop with out causing the neighbors to freak. plus the honey you'll harvest will make saving the bees seem worth it.

we need tougher bees.

How dare you question the wisdom of Bill Oddie, lowimpakt.
Get your coat.

My Dad used to keep bees and I used to help him quite a bit. It is pretty easy. Less maintenance than a pet, and more rewards in terms of things to eat (you can only eat your dog once like.... bees keep on giving).
Varoa is partly to blame isn't it? Is there countries without it?

I could ditch my cell phone. Its nice not having one. I got my first one during the dotcoms days from my employer. After they folded, I didn't get one until 2004.

This kind of makes me want to go live in the forest and have my own bee hives. That would be pretty awesome. I won't, but it would be great.

...by the way, we're also running out of oil.

They just need to combine bee hives in places where you are supposed to turn off your cellphone. Put hives in classrooms, churches, and movie theaters. Problem solved!
