Looking to get an external hard-drive. Not too expensive, but at least 1TB. What's a good one? Is it possible to get a 1TB drive that doesn't need a power supply?? Any help much appreciated...

i think 500gs is the biggest no power supply drives out there... they can get expensive without power. otherwise i just bought an inexpensive LaCie 1tb drive w/ supply and its sweet.

Read this on Gizmodo a couple of days ago.
3TB for only $250, 2TB for $190, 1TB for $130Has USB 2.0, FireWire, or USB 3.0 (using adaptors)
Not sure if it works with a Mac though.

Also has a REALLY cheap NAS solution too, sold separately of course.
- I was looking into getting that one myself. I think it's a good dealzaq

Do not buy WD MyBook Studio, those fuckers are hardware encrypted and if the enclosure fails, you cannot read the drive in another enclosure (you actually risk rendering the data unretrievable by putting the drive in another enclosure).

sounds like you will be carrying it around. why do you need 1TB? i would rather have the big drive at home/office and only use a smaller drive as portable.

I recently bought a new external USB powered hard drive and I wad looking at a 1TB drive.
As always with external harddrives there will be drives that fail. However when researching drives you will notice a large increase in failure frequency with the larger 1tb USB drives.
This for me wasn't good enough for me I wanted something more reliable. So I decided against it and got a slightly smaller 750gb USB powered seagate expansion drive.
Also to my knowledge seagate USB drives are the most reliable.
If you want 1TB get a not very portable 3.5" (which means mains powered) desktop hard drive.
Obviously you could get a 1tb USB and it might be fine, but im not a gambler! Hope that helps.

instead of starting a new thread, i might as well continue with this one. i'm in the market for a desktop external drive, 2TB minimum.
i was checking out the LaCie Hard Disk Quadra 2TB, which would allow for wireless network capabilities. any ideas though guys?
i do motion design and would like the option of working off the hard drive, if that makes a difference.
- now, it was a 2 years ago but i really hated networked HD. it always disconnected.akrok
- get one of these > http://www.newertech…akrok
- don't by one with out fan.
akrok - buy. (it should said)akrok
- hadn't had any problems with networked HD—my gf has a 1TB LaCie Quadra.mcmillions
- then again, never tried working in AE off her drive, nor was her drive ever used as time machine backupmcmillions
- what ever you pick, i hope it goes well. :-)akrok

I like having one case that can be re-used, then putting the used drive in storage or in my tower.

i had a wd - and it blew up.
took it to a guy who retrieves data, and he said that the heat from the power caused parts of the soldering to melt... says it's pretty common with western digital. anyway - too far gone to get anything back. luckly always have 2 copies of everything remotely.

I just bought a seagate usb3.0/3tb for like 220us. Same as he ones mentioned^. Networkable ones aren't much more, definitely a good deal if they don't suck to hard, we'll see how long it lasts.
