Awesome Explosion Cloud!

We were having a drink outdoors this past Saturday, and all of a sudden people were turning and freaking out at this huge cloud of smoke. It quickly started forming into a circle; it was fucking awesome. Had to have been at least 100 feet across. The smoke was just spiraling in on itself - you really can't see from the video but imagine a sideways tornado-like ring just spinning around itself.
I took off to see what had happened and an electrical transformer had exploded in an alley, dropping one of the transformers on a truck and setting it on fire. I'll post that video if I get a chance.
FYI - these are the things that exploded:
I have scoured the Internet looking for any evidence of a cloud forming like this but can't find anything. Transformers are filled with oil that acts as a coolant for the voltage flowing through the poles as it changes from one level to another.

we/i blew one of those once while digging a trench with a walk-behind trencher. i used to work for a comed subsidiary and was putting in new power to a burned out house. someone dropped the ball and didn't note that power had never been cut off to the house so i was diggin along and all of a sudden the transformer explodes in this massive fireball from the telephone pole and the electrical shock shorted out the engine of the machine, shocking me in the process. after i checked my pants for shit the neighbors started to come out bitching at me for knocking out their cable during their soaps. "OH HEY YEAH THANKS YOU OLD HAG I'M FINE, I JUST GOT THE SHIT SHOCKED OUT OF ME BUT I'LL MAKE THE CALL TO GET YOUR POWER RESTORED SO YOUR FAT ASS CAN WATCH TV. I DON'T NEED AN AMBULANCE." no cloud like that but the sound was deafening and the transformer was probably 80ft away from me at the time.
