my macbook pro won't start...fried motherboard most likely.
I remember there was a way to book the laptop as an external drive so I can retrieve files.
Anyone remember how?

DONT TOUCH IT. SERIOUSLY
I advise you to do nothing
go with it to an apple store. What date is it from?
If I hadn't touched mine, would have probably got it repaired for free, even though the warranty already expired.
I tried to diagnostic at home, did all kind of stuff laying on blogs. ended up doing more harm.
Happened to a friend of mine, he did as I said, didn't touch anything, went to the store and got it fixed for free, Warranty already off...

Attempting to get files off using target disk mode wont void the warranty...
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode:

yeah...I don't plan to try and do anything to it myself...just want to backup my files.
Thanks for the warning though!

the problem is you're starting it up, even just for firewire.
you may have just the graphic card fucked up, there was a factory problem with them on a whole generation.
By pushing it now, you may fry the whole logic board (what happened to me) and if you do, no free fixy!! really, just go with it to a store, remove the hd, put it on a case and you can boot your system from it, as if nothing happened. Frying the Logic Board completely will cost you 500$

1 get the hard drive out.
2 put it in a sata to usb cable / carrier.
3 copy all needed
4 take it to a macstore and see if they can bring it back to life

You'll need the sound bite for the start up page

If the drive is removable, doing so and putting it in an enclosure for data extraction is the safest way. Otherwise target disk mode is the quickest/easiest way to try to get files off it.
Sounds like what EKSEMA did was attempt some homebrew repairs without knowing what he was doing and ended up fubaring his laptop.
- No I didn't. I followed simple steps like clearing PRAM and stuff as mentioned on apple website.ESKEMA
- I'm not stupid. But trying to start up a malfunctioning Logic Board a few times doesn't do it good.ESKEMA
- And when it happened to me, my warranty had already passed out, didn't think they could fix it for free.ESKEMA
