I've found myself becoming a salesman.I honestly intended to start out as a designer.
I really did.
Then suddenly realised that doing freelance all the time and becoming the slave of clients was killing me.
So I ended up selling.
And giving the work I get to freelancers...
What's your journey?

i am horrible.... and if i ever try to lower a price, which i don't cuz i get embarrassed, i most definitely would end up paying more

I hate all the bullshitting and small talk that seems to go hand in hand with sales.

WhiteFace - there can be a lot of crap talked. Loads of buzz works and 'return on investments' and all that crap.

I shift paradigms and revolutionize boxes.

I know a great small agency looking for someone like you. You should email me and I can give you more details.

Nice article on this from 99%. Not revolutionary but may re-frame it positively for some

I remember when I started freelancing a few years back I asked one of my ex employes, who I was still friends with, " how do you go from freelance/solopreneur to design firm?". Although heavily paraphrased his answer was "you have to stop designing and concentrate on sales and relationship building".
Its very frustrating.

Trying to claw my way out of the career dead end called production design.

Part of a collective of freelancers, each does their own particular profession. EG.. If i land an animation job, i manage our animation guy and Illustration guy. If one of them lands a web job, they manage me. Also, If I land a web job it is soley me ... and so on. Means I get to do all of the above, some creative, some sales and admin...
Works for us and the tax stays simple as we are all technically individual freelancers.

Yeah. I'm always amazed how far a little sweet-talking / bullshitting goes. Landed a couple well-paying freelance gigs by talking like I know what the fuck i'm doing :)

I started as web/php developer in a global sanitation supply company, worked with report automation, ended up as EDI sell out specialist for Nordic countries (I process data from the distributors in SAP and keep track of our end users)
