the government guarantees are a moral hazard. Doesn't mean the banks are devoid of responsibility.

It does mean exactly that: banks are devoid of responsibility.
The irony is, people think this is capitalism and blame it. Capitalism is long gone, this is corporate welfare state. Thanks for the link, I didn't know that definition.
- No, they're not devoid of responsibility. If it wasn't illegal to murder -> would you be a serial killer?lukus_W

Those who are most able to afford it, should pay the most -> those who are close to poverty, should pay least.

I think everyone agrees that the banks have caused this one way or another, the way the banks are run is completely void of morality, that goes without saying, but saying it is not fair won't get us very far. And the government has allowed the situation to exist because while it was going on it looked like things were pretty good, things kept getting better, profits kept going up, economy kept going up...
Unfortunately the financial services do have the government kind've over a barrel as they pay so much tax. Is the alternative to make then pay so much that they take their business out of the country and leave us with an even greater hole in the finances?

Chancellor making the self employed sound like criminals...

Yep, the self-employed just got another shafting - NI going up to close the gap with employed contributions.
You'd think the self-employed would be protected above all by the Conservatives. Entrepreneurial go-getters. Can-do grafters. Non-unionised strivers.
In reality the government doesn't give a fuck. We're the ultimate tool in massaging figures / hiding reality. Huge numbers of the growing self-employed workforce are becoming so through lack of any alternative. People have no choice but to start out on their own - and the government claims it's promoting new businesses. Get laid off, can't find work, have no choice but to freelance and go straight onto the government's figures for new businesses created.
Some companies lay people off and then re-hire them as self-employed in order to avoid liability for things like sick-pay, holiday pay, pension contributions, training, equipment. The lower national insurance rates for self-employed are supposed to mitigate that to a certain extent. It doesn't (didn't) come close. Add in the fact that employers can drive down costs by having contractors under-cut each other for work that once was done by full-timers, pass liability and insurance risk off the books and demand that contractors have their own tools / equipment / software.
Conveniently for the government, self employed income isn't included in overall earnings measures. That's because the gap between employed and self-employed earnings is between 20-30% in favour of employed, and widening. If self-employed income were included, it would destroy the government's claims that wages are increasing.
- we're an easy target for cash grab, that's why.hans_glib
- there are companies who base their business model on screwing the self-employed like this. No mention of increasing their tax liability.Fax_Benson

They seem to be really be letting loose on the self employed suddenly.
Big changes to IR35 coming in this April... introducing 4 digital turnover declarations a year plus the annual tax return coming in... and now the NI changes.

Framing this around 'tax dodging self-employed' is the usual tory way of demonising a section of society and turning everyone against them. Same old divide and conquer crap.
They're not pro small business, they're completely in the pocket of big businesses. It's been in big corporates favour to erode workers rights, make it easier to get rid of staff, push thousands of people into self employment. and now they're lining up as many opportunities to trip them up with tax and fines.
Just wait until they pull us out of Europe and the tories can really go to town on workers rights.
- fucking crook politicians.. and how much do the big guys owe, starbucks apple etc, foreign embassies in london owe £95m in congestion chargers etc...fruitsalad
- All of the general public, small ltd's etc in UK should refuse to pay any tax until the government gets what it is owed from above mentioned.fruitsalad

Oh come on. The moralising.
I'm self employed and pay corporation tax on my earnings at 20%, rather than income tax at 45%.
The UK is easily, and by a long way the most beneficial place on earth to be self-employed.
Nicking a couple hundred quid a year is hardly the worlds worst crime.
- sure, it's not in absolute terms terrible, but in relative terms - in regards to what apple, starbucks, embassies, lords etc get away with, it's not onfruitsalad
