Computers are not appliances and you must actively manage security whatever the system. Want an appliance get an iPad.
As for reliability, you tend to get what you pay for, buy cheap and it'll tend to fail more often. My experience is that IBM and Apple hardware is very robust, as is OS X. Anecdotally, Win7 is said to be much better than any Microsoft OS which preceded it.

I hate to point this out, but FTP is as insecure on OSX as it is on a PC. Any computer user worth their salt would know this before deciding to connecting to ANY servers by FTP. A user worth their salt would know that the software is not to blame, merely the protocol itself, and they would wisely use sFTP.
Obviously you should not be allowed anywhere near a server (since it's proven you're not responsible enough to handle 'options'), and should probably consider getting some training before you continue on this career path...
- I thought he meant the FTP client itself leaked the passwords?detritus
- ALL ftp clients leak passwords. That's my point.********
- Unless you tunnel through SSH - sFTP.********
- FTP is like email - naked in transit.********
- I meant that the virus-a-ma-jig perused the client's list of bookmarks, then reported home with that info.detritus

@jamble (previous page)
agreed, it isn't hard to run windows with an anti virus and stay virus free.
I've been using windows xp for 8 years now and only once got a virus when I was new to computers and had no anti virus.
I have now been without an anti virus program for about 4 years and still haven't got any viruses - I just dont be a retard and Avoid dodgy websites.
As for reinstalling windows, that's old school. You heard of imaging? I use the program acronis true image. I can have a fresh install of xp, with all my adobe apps and games installed in 30 minutes. It's not a bother at all.

- exactly. thats the way i roll. no problems whatsoever.********

Which obviously doesn't help people who are new to XP, so you then just install an anti virus and it does it all for you.
- LOL. McAfee provided a security hole in XP and took down servers recently.monospaced

Just buy a computer you can afford that will allow you to run the software you need to do your job, and shut the flying fuck up. Macs do some things better, as do PCs, anything else is just tired arguments and user error.

Mr know lives up to his name.
The computer is merely a tool to get a job done, choose which works best and stop being a windows fan boy / apple fan boy tool!
I was working at this place where a chick came in for an interview, had it went home was later called back for a 2nd interview in which she asked if we used macs or pcs, my boss explained we used pcs, she then said oh I'm not interested then.
She was clearly a tool.

@Hombre_Lobo. Maybe she just realises that the Mac interface suits the way she thinks and doesn't want to spend her day fuddling through something that just feels alien to her. I've used both and Macs suit me better, as does InDesign over Quark or Freehand (RIP) over Illustrator.
Also Word 2008 for Mac seems like a much more intuitive interface than 2007 on Windows, and I'm constantly frustrated by secretary/admin types who now need my help in Word cause they can't do their work anymore. Sorry ladies & gents, I just don't want to help you cause that program is a clusterfuck.
- It's all about what works with you, and not having to learn more than is necessary to get the job done.Amicus
