i think the only reason this boring shit appeals to anyone at all is because there's literally nothing negative you can say about it because IT HAS NO FUCKING FEATURES.
same reason why designers wear black (can't fuck up a black outfit!) hate hipsters (can't mock a guy wearing khakis!) and like helvetica (can't hate a font with no character!)
it's all just so... safe.
- don't you wear black? are you admitting that your attire is "safe" and lacks character?Mr_Know
- also swiss design and helvetica have plenty of features: grid structure and careful proportions for exampleMr_Know
- you're defining features as needless ornamentation which is the opposite of the intent, and frankly misses the pointMr_Know
- i often wear "safe" clothing because i don't feel like thinking about it. which is what i see happening in many cases of so-called "swiss design"scarabin
- "minimalist" design. it's all formulae that basically remove most of the decisions a designer makes with a piecescarabin
- –removing its character and humanityscarabin
- you're also lumping "non-minimalist" with "useless ornamentation". how about some concept?scarabin
- so now you're equating aesthetics with concept?Mr_Know
- well... the swiss stuff is okay in a midcentury, middle european middle-everything context...vaxorcist

minimalism is a crutch

scarabin, you have taken the reins of this runaway freight train thread and steered incisively into a deep and cutting insight into life. in the end, seeing the posts of others in this thread tells us more about ourselves.

dont you wear all black scarabin?

scara- minimalism isn't visually pleasing to you? the decluttering and stripping down of mindless excess? personally, i like it. Brockmann's posters are like a nice piece of clean, modern architecture. it's about self-control, class, grid, & structure. it's needed as a refresh and refuge from all the overly-designed crap out there. it stays.
- just my opinion. but i can see how you wouldn't be into it - being into the goth aesthetic & all.iCanHasQBN
- i'm not into the goth aesthetic.scarabin
- whatever you wanna call it... i dont care.iCanHasQBN
- "it stays" LOL!!!!!whereRI

comic sans has more personality than helvetica. much more.
- but that personality is of a twat. Say something worth saying in Helvetica.mikotondria3
- i dunno... Europeans like it?iCanHasQBN
- but really, the appeal of Helvetica is that it is structured and default-looking, making it a decent candidate foriCanHasQBN
- projects with a modernist, minimalist style.iCanHasQBN
- people have animosity toward it mainly for the fact that it's been used so much. but that shouldn't discount it's quality.iCanHasQBN

This coming from a guy that works in an industry where 90% of movie posters are set in Trajan. Talk about boring shit.
- i wouldn't exactly assume designing movie posters is boring. sounds fun, even if you do have to use trajan.iCanHasQBN
- i haven't used trajan in a poster in yearsscarabin
- but yeah, i'm opposed to lazy, boring design in general, not just this stuffscarabin
- yes.. but you have to fit soooo much type in such a small area at the bottom, lots of fun..vaxorcist

scarabin, if you were paying attention, you might realize this thread isn't about swiss design at all...
- dMullins0
Helvetica feels—to typography—like Japanese white rice feels to traditional Japanese cuisine. On its own it may seem pretty bland to most people. Helvetica is a great amplifier of clarity without drawing attention to its own form.
Your little tirade about hipsters, the color, and khakis is pretty inane though.

lol @ scarabin stepping in to miss the point entirely.
in 20 years do you think newsboards will be doing parodies of your creative directors posters.
