Besides money, and paying their bills on time, what else do you want from clients?

ffffound invites would be nice.

Understanding and willingness to be educated about design / technology processes.
If they're women they should look more like supermodels.
If they're men they should want to have a beer and smoke a stogie with me.
Also would be nice if they participated in ritual blood sacrifice once in a while.

That they act like grownups and an understanding that it takes two to make good design. An understanding of deadlines to give content, ...

a clear vision of what they want helps

That they understand how much time is involved in the design process. It IS our job to educate them through the process but I have worked with people who refuse to understand. Once when discussing the development of a wordmark a client started to argue with me about the amount of time involved. He started arguing with me and said "look (while typing into MSWord), I just typed the word. It took me 5 seconds." I told him he was all set, then.
- ugh, sorry I need to take the time to write more thoughtful posts. Am multi-tasking too much.Josev

money.

Having their shit together is the number one thing I look for during that first meeting. If they are unorganized, or have vague business objectives, I will write a polite letter that says something to the effect of, "I don't think we are compatible."

^ delivering necessary assets (copy, etc) early enough on in the game that the project can be finished by their own due date

A 10 years retainer contract for loads of monthly cash would be nice.

Paying on time for a change would be great!

- a clear goal, or at least a willingness NOT to randomly change goals.
- an understanding of the difference between matters of taste, and matters of carefully considered principles.
- an understanding that the target market is PROBABLY NOT EVERYONE, and probably not PEOPLE JUST LIKE THEM... unless, say they're deliberately marketing snowboards to retired baby boomers..

The nicest thing I can hear from a client is 'If you want to do that, I trust you. After all, you're the designer.'

a partnership that actually equals work on both sides. almost completely worn out from clients who can't understand that they need to create content or at least allow us to work with them to create it rather than treating it as a last thought and bang it out. instead they focus on tweaking shades of blue. fucking marketing people seem to be the worst although a new breed of MBA seems to think time is best spent on making sure no text is all uppercase ("because it's hard to read") rather than actually focusing on well written and clear communication.

As Samush and orrinward have stated - Trust and Respect. Healthy doses of admiration and a willingness to sign fat checks are also great.
