I've been looking for work for quite a while now and while I've been keeping myself going with freelance work I haven't seen that many jobs for print designers (or designers who aren't just digital). I know we're in the middle of a recession but c'mon! I'm I not looking in the right places or is print really dead?

Are you sure you don't have a Cinema 4D question?

not gone, just a bit smaller

print's not dead, but I think knowing and working in print is turning into more of an art director's role where print is part of a bigger campaign including photography and/or web/new media crap.

All the print designers I know aren't 100% print anymore, unless they're in publishing. Even they are getting slightly interactive/digital.

you're right print all the print jobs are gone and they ain't coming back!! It took me a couple of months to realize this after quitting my print job last year and looking for work in print. it's tough out there and i worked in nyc. now i am off to learn something else that has to do with technology...HCI...UI..UX
it's all "magic ink"...i.e. software is the future, trying going without your web browser for a month. it will put things in perspective.

i have been having this same problem.
What do you feel would be best to learn for a guy with silkscreen/ industrial/ environmental/ print background?
I feel like digital is the new way but I dont know where to start.... sorry to hijack the thread.

^ make a website. If you don't know how, use google and learn.
All your other skills will come into play as your comfort level grows with the medium.

I find it a bit weird for any designer to be looking for a solely print design gig, not just now, but in the past 8 - 10 years, they're not out there and for good reason.. Personally I've been doing both for relatively the same amount of time (about 11 years).. I'm not a front end developer or anything but have always had to be aware of the limitations and best practice examples that surround communications on the web.. It's just a given...
there are loads of "designer" positions out there still, but I reckon 95% of them expect you to at least understand the medium in which you are designing.. to me that's a basic understanding of the various programming languages, cross browser issues and whether you adhere to it or not, a degree of usability...

well, you could be really into package/packaging design.

HTML5, jQuery, etc
"I keep seeing questions about learning HTML5, JavaScript, jQuery, etc from print designers and thought it was time for a fresh new thread that consolidated some information into one location. The main thing to know is that this stuff is EASY..."

look around you everyday. do you see no magazines, no newspapers, no posters, no flyers, no fucking everything. jesus christ on a bicycle. obviously the sphere of experience you're revolving in isn't doing print but are you fucking serious?!?
