Yeah, I mean both of their approaches make sense for them. There was no way Google was gonna break into the mobile space w/o basically giving their OS away for free. They even went so far as to carve off some of the Google search revenue with the phone makers to make picking Android more appealing from what I understand.
Personally I'd rather see entirely new companies in the space. iOS and Android are both good but if that's all is out there, it becomes kind of limited, doesn't it?

I think we'll see other operating-systems branch off from Android .. and webOS is supposed to be good. More choice is always best - and I suppose every software product / company has a finite lifespan.
All I really want - is to see things stay relatively open. I tend to over think things - and I might be wrong - but from where I'm sitting, digital technologies + corporate control = a huge clusterfck for everyone unless corporate responsibility is required. It's not a huge deal now .. but in 10 / 20 years it will be.

Yeah, but keep in mind companies are always in favor of open source when it suits them.
Still waiting for Google to open source their search engine...;)

Windows 7 mobile version should be out soon...can't hold my breath for a second on any MS product, but previews looked good
I hope it is at least good enough to play ball, making the space a true 3 player game

I hear it works much like a Zune does, have you ever played with a Zune? It is pretty nicely done.
