I'm redesigning this annual report for my portfolio class and I originally used garamond. I was told to rethink my type and its placement. Btw the report has a dark background in the majority of it's pages. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

stay away from book weight faces and look for type with either a medium or demi weight. use something with a large x-height and short descenders and ascenders. you should also stay away from high-contrast, thick/thin faces like didones.
set the type a little larger and with more leading and letter spacing than you normally would. this will increase legibility and combat eye fatigue on a dark background. the larger they point size, the brighter the color you can use use. if you want to get carried away exaggerate even more for great effect.
a few good choices would be newzald from klim, gotham from h&fJ, or even helvetica if you are a purist.

of course your choice of type should somehow relate to the company for which the report is for, and not just type that happens to be en-vogue. if you are willing to share the company it's for, or even the industry, i can give you some more relevant choices.

The only Serif I would use reversed would be a Slab Serif, such as Vitesse or Archer. Sentinel might have just enough strength to be carried off on a good coated stock.
Sans like National would be a great choice.
