I hired a web developer to build the e-commerce part of a site. I'm doing the non ecommerce part of the on WordPress. He told me he intended to use EDTHosting, an MS supported hosting solution.
My current host is Dreamhost. My developer want's me to switch to EDT, but EDT does not support WordPress.
What are your thoughts on MS based hosting solutions?
Thanks.

Well, why did you decide to even do the eCommerce potion in .Net?
- Whats the reason behind the decision?ETM
- This is the Host my developer is familiar with, and likes. Why is this good or bad?monoblanco
- You should not be deciding on a site's platform/technology just because of a host preference.ETM

if it's MS based it's IIS servers ?, i dont like IIS technology, Apache is amazing, i heard good things about nginx too. edthosting says "support php" why it would not support wp?

I suspect you are not familiar with how to install WP and you want a host that simply provides it pre-instaleld. Is that right?

The guy told me that EDT does not support it. I was surprised and skeptical, but whatever. I have never installed WordPress without the "one button Install" either. Regardless of that Im not going to switch Dreamhost only because I prepaid for 2 years.
My question is, I don't know much about what's good / bad about this .NET solution.
- .NET is mostly used by corporate IT departments to work with other corp stuff.. and cost $$$ and take FOREVERvaxorcist

Arrgh.....
Either:
1. use wordpress and a unix/php/etc host
or
2. use .NET and only .NET, and drink the kool-aid....using wordpress on Windows hosting CAN be done, but it's like driving a chevy with a ford engine in it....
- alot of .NET developers ONLY know .NET... things cost $$ in .NET that are free on linuxvaxorcist

Are you designing some sort of eCommerce setup from scratch? I would ask why? I would drop the current developer and find a LAMP developer (Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP). They can advise you on some of the great free, open source options and you can just pay them to adapt one of the already great tools out there and you can easily stick to the WP platform you are comfortable with.
- Does it have to work with some pre-existing inventory system that's in Windows?!?vaxorcist

There may even be someone on here who can help you out... anyone?

wordpress on a windows server is a fucking nightmare. even if they said they support it, the actual reality is sketchy and all kinds of fucked. if you're going wordpress as a cms then you need to find another developer that can support you not a host that supports them. my 2 cents.

I see nothing wrong with .NET. I used to use PHP and .NET but decided to switch to .NET. There are hosting companies that support PHP/mySQL on Windows hosting packages:
www.register365.com/ - I use it but don't recommend it (control panel is a joke)
www.blacknight.com - easy to use parallels hosting control panelWhat you could do is a hybrid solution - domain and subdomain setup - one is using .net on windows package, second is using linux/unix package (and vice versa)

Actually as of right now EDT's own site has crashed "Server Error in '/' Application.
Could not load file or assembly 'App_Licenses' or one of its dependencies. There is not enough space on the disk. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070070) "The bit about MS specialists and being MS supported could be correct, their site is broken and they seem to be completely f**king useless.

I've seen this dynamic before.... .NET stuff running into the ground...
I don't blame microsoft...
I blame a 9-5 mindset from corporate IT dept guys.... some of them just don't get the idea of a 24/7 webserver.....

MCSE officially means Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, but it's known by many system admins as "Memorized Complete Syntax Encylopedia" because the certification was mostly about trivia from the manual, rather than actual experience-based fixing things.... and MCSE's tend to flake in a freak moment....
