I need an iPad for a project I'm doing and now that they pushed the UK launch date back, I'm considering getting a friend of mine to ship it over.
Do you reckon they would they let it in easily?
Would I happy to pay some sort of TAX?They can send it as a gift and it' be alright - right?

Dude - so many errors... should have checked it before posting it.

I don't see it being a problem. They cant stop someone from shipping something as a gift or even if you did buy it from a friend. IMO

^ Yep, a gift should be fine.

In Ireland (and other EU countries as I understand) purchases from outside EU up to €22 and gifts up to €45 (including postage) are VAT-free.
Above this, expect to pay VAT and a fee for the service of adding VAT to your package (I shit you not, they tax for taxing too).
- They charge a *fee* for taxing, if they have any sense of evil the fee will be subject to tax.comicsans

I used to live in Berlin and got taxed for some music gear I bought in Switzerland (which is outside the EU).
But I think in the UK is slightly different, right?
I'm sure they monitor stuff you buy.I remember somebody saying that he bought loads of cheap books in Amazon US, thinking he was being really smart.
And at the end of the year he received a massive bill for every single purchase.- I can understand that but someone else is buying it for him and just shipping it to himiheartfun

Not from Amazon of course.

If your friend sends it via US Post, chances of your getting duty tax would be lowered. Just dont send it via UPS / FedEx etc.

Mmmmm.... I was totally thinking UPS - Fedex.
Is US Post secure? Can you put some insurance in case it gets lost?

I would use Priority Mail or Express Mail from US Post.
One thing you have remember is that if you the amount you declare is the amount you will be insured to. Any item under $250 are not usually the subject of duty. Anything over at time will be subjected to search and duty.
I would label it as a used computer (do not say ipad or anything specific). Let your friend just open the plastic wrap. And declare and insure it for the full amount.

Oh one more thing, I sometimes ship it with used clothing that I wont miss as a padding and also as to make it look like I am shipping back stuff back home or sending back stuff left here for a friend.

Gift it, but from the sound of it, your postal service are a bunch of Nazis

you can lower the value of the item also. just don't go to low.

My current laptop got delivered from the States as a $20 gift. The seller put it in a kitchenware box so it weighed about right and they didn't check it.
My laptop before that got found out and I had to pay 60% customs charges at the value estimated by customs, as opposed to the low value the seller put it as. That was not a friendly 300 pound markup.

Thanks for the replies.
WOW imagine getting a £300 on the already overpriced iPad.
Was wondering how all those Chinese retailers on Ebay ship their stuff as well. They seem to be pretty popular.
