Actually I usually specify Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, in that order.

- You should see what your site looks like on a PC with helvetica in that case ;)graham

hmmm i did suggest that to our code monkey but she isn't very negotiable. She gave me only two options.

A monkey does your code? Time to get a real human.

Don't let your code monkey bully you unless she has a better reason than 'those are the only system fonts there are'.
If there's something that's reasonably common but not a system font, put it at the start of your font list and then finish with Arial, sans-serif for users who don't have the font.
For example:
font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif;Anyone without Helvetica Neue should see Arial.
Your code monkey would be aware of that I would have thought? Maybe she's in a grump :)

Thanks, will have a chat to her tommo.

If you continue to have problems, ask for a coding example that shows what the bejezus she is bubbling about; we'd all be curious.

Tahoma/Geneva and Lucida Sans/Grande are other options...

arial for pc, helvetica for mac and verdana for text that requires bolding at 10px

it really depends on what the site is, and how the design looks. There are a lot of sites out there where Verdana is a perfect fit.

or you can use @font-face rule.
- That's not reat advice yet, much as I like @f-f.detritus
