ive been asked to produce a brochure (yes im the in house seo but i also designed in the past lol) and i have to arange a photoshoot... whats the best way to go about this? should i sketch some ideas to show the photographer or leave him to dazzle me with beauty?

it depends on whether or not you are trying to go with a specific look or whether you would like the photographer to have free range. If you give them an idea of what you are looking for then most good photographers should be able to deliver on that.

sketch + tear sheets

If you have something in mind, style, technique, location, etc. Definitely let the photographer know ahead of time. Most photographers will then send you a few samples to double check, you should def. do this as well... do some research and show him samples of what you like and want to achieve. Once you both agree, then let him do his thing.

I've been on both sides of this.... as a photog and as an agency hack...
2 possible approaches:
1. find your ideas/mood/demographic/colors/lo... and then find a photographer whose portfolio looks almost exactly like this and hire them, but DON'T change the idea/look much if at all after you hire them. Be prepared for fairly large invoice.
2.Find a smart and versatile photographer who can think on their feet, work with them after you've decided your look/mood/demographic and have some sketches... they may have great ideas to add, but you need to start with clear direction...
NOTE: DO NOT:
1. show istockphoto comps to client, they may expect your photog to duplicate them almost exactly...
2. Hire a photog with style X and then ask for style Y unless you make it clear at the beginning
3. skimp on food on the shoot, this can spoil the mood

I'd try a list a few key ideas - bullet pointed list if possible which outlined what you are trying to convey. If it's specific things then a shopping list will help. For example, photograph of reception, photograph of conference room (showing view or lake) . . . etc. just so you get all that you need.
It's easier to tick off a list of shots during a busy days shoot than rely on a "cover it all" type instruction.
If you're looking for a style I'd be more focused on the photographer's past work and make sure they know what it is you're looking for - so reportage, or informal portraits or whatever.
A couple of guide images can be useful but don't go over the top as you may just get back what you've shown them.

Think about the level of control.... do you have an exact list? Very clear req's? Do you need to hire models and book MUA's? Or is it a fast and loose shoot with lots of improvisation?
Two very different styles of photographers.... ask about previous shoots to get an idea.... Brochures usually have smaler budgets than ads going in magazines, so more likely a looser shoot...
I've worked as a digital tech/lighting tech on higher end shoots with abig crew... where we shot tethered and had the layout on one screen and the current shot on another screen as we were shooting, it was that controlled.... and yes, it cost $$$
I've also shot very fast and loose with AD's I knew and trusted... if you're shooting very loose, knowing each other is key to getting usable shots and no dissapointments....

sketch out roughly what you want or even put together mood boards of the type of photography you like from other peoples sites/brochures/magazines

depends on how you are picking the photographer - if you like a particluar photographers style of work and it suits the project let him have free reign, if you are using an all-rounder then definately give plenty of guidance.

trooperbill...provided the number of possible answers, have you considered rephrasing your question for a more precise answer?

this is all good guys. Do i need to be there on the day or is that poking my nose in where its not wanted and whats this about supplying food?
i'll work on a moodboard type collage and various poses of furniture i like as well as surroundings. ill put together a board of things i dont like too which should help i suspect.
