i use http://www.bethere.co.uk
and have been for several years now. reliable and to be fair, great customer service when there have been problems (which were dealt with fast and efficiently).

O2 are good (same as Be basically), get money off if you already have a mobile with them.
Otherwise I'd consider Talk Talk because of their stance on the Digital Economy Bill

Virgin Media - If you can get it, get it.. No other ISP comes close in terms of speed.
- which is capped resulting in hours of 1mbps downloadtrooperbill

FUCK Virgin Media.
No point in having all that bandwidth if you're limited to a half megabyte of downloads per month, so they then throttle back your oh-so fast connection to 28.8kb for entire months on end as punishment.
Virgin media are fucking cunts for consumer drones who don't really know how to use the internet.
BeThere, on the other hand, are great.
- < slightly burned by Virgin, if it's not blindingly obvious.detritus

One big variable where speed is concerned is the contention ratio - I believe you can find out what yours is on your line, before you sign up.
If you live in a busy zone, with lots of internet connections sharing the same local line, then yes, it may perhaps be better to go with Virgin on Cable, if you have that option available.
Just watch their stupidly tight restrictions...

FUCK VIRGIN MEDIA
Tried to send debt collectors after me because I was with NTL before the rebrand, they said they had been sending me letters for weeks but it was to a house I moved out of 6 months earlier. Turned out I didn't owe them anything anyway, got the old "oh sorry we have two systems" excuse.
Fuck them, basic fucking shit to check before you start sending threatening letters to people over a measly £30.

Talktalk was in my old flat and the service was pretty good, the odd slowdown on peak times but nothing worth griping about.
virgin media can suck my balls for the exact reasons mentioned above and their customer service is rubbish.
Virgin media will be the last resort, as that 50mb fiber optics is in our area and makes me drool... i am a magpie though....- nowt wrong with the shiny - you could download a divx film in about 20 seconds...zr

Oh yeah - I forgot to mention the giddying delights of Virgin's premium-rate Tech 'help' (I use the word reservedly, they were very little help, other than the occasional conspirational agreement from the techies I eventually got to speak to that 'yes, their service sucked') and being kept on hold for nauseating amounts of time.
- premium-rate .. jesus - how do these companies get away with it.********

Yep it seems your experience of Virgin is different. I had the 20MB package for 2 years at my old place and for want of a better word, raped it. 20-25mb/s downloads are a dream compared to the 4-6mb/s Be can muster.
Having said that - Virgin's support is terrible, I just did my best to avoid it.

virgin are pretty crooked on their throttling of your bandwidth, my mate (just north of finsbury pk) is an internet tech and ran a load of diagnostics as on the 20mb plan they were barely getting 2mb and called them up with all the results. he called them on pretending it was a supply/demand problem from the tests he was quoting and after some wrangling is now getting 20mb all the time. Id say its not really worth the extra cash for the bigger packages unless you fancy lots of technical phonecalls. but then again their on demand TV stuff is a dream so im willing to suffer it out

I have Virgin 10mb connection and I get between 6-8mb which I am happy with.
It is the most cost effective solution for me. And I got seriously burned with the wankstains at BT

The best deals are usually the bundles of TV, tel and broadband from Sky and VirginMedia. So even though I would pick Be/o2 or Zen for standalone broadband, I'm on VirginMedia cable again after moving house because it just doesn't make sense to pay for a separate broadband service.. Virgin is fast enough, but in first 3 months the router, tele box had to be replaced, and had modem troubles and Virgin network failures.

can you get an uncapped connection with virgin?
- As much as you can get anywhere else - I would frequently exceed the 5GB at peak time limit with no effect.zr
- ribit0
They say its unlimited, but there's all sorts of throttling..

I have been with virgin media for years and had no problem with there internet service at all. But the company are a useless bunch of morons at the best of time. It was mush better when Telewest where running the show.

Jesus you've moved to Finsbury park, it won't matter about your connection, as your house will be burgled and they will steal all your stuff!

My experience with VM is not the greatest. The first time I had them our connection didn't get past 512k. Tried umpteen routers and numerous times on the phone to tech support with no avail...
Second time was umpteen line problems and 'signal refreshes', my landlord got them in because she didn't want to pay the £150 connection fee. That was a complete nightmare...
After that I vowed never to go near them again. I hope I don't have to,

ive recently got myself an ipredator.se account and my virgin download speed is flying!
- that proves that they use traffic shaping I guess********

I don't care what anyone else is said, BE offers the fastest ADSL2+, they're looking into line bonding for the future for a reasonable price and they're trialling SRA
VM are expensive if you want 50mbit and they have crazy caps and restrictions.
All the other ISPs are just a joke. (and I've had a few of them)
