The UK passed a harsh anti-piracy law today giving ISPs the power to turn off your internet access if you illegally download anything.
"The law means that ISPs will have to send letters to their subscribers who have been linked to copyright infringements and, after these warnings, suspend their accounts. Copyright holders will be able to apply for a court order to gain access to the names and addresses of serious infringers and take legal action."
What do those of you in the UK think of this?

Ouch. Fatal blow to internet privacy in the UK.

we think fail

That's incorrect: ".. if you illegally download anything"
It's actually worse: if you are *accused* of illegally download anything. No court involved, no proof required. That's why I'm fighting it. We should all be writing to our MPs about this.

"Yes, that means the UK government could decide to block Wikileaks, which carries copyrighted work".
So, any site which carries copyrighted work... Not good!

It's bullshit, but wont stop anything people will just SSH or use Tor.
Just moronic dinosaurs in power going too far to stop something they don't even understand.

A reply from my MP Emily Thrornberry has an attached letter from Stephen Timms, where he refers to the "Intellectual Property (IP) address" (!)
They have no idea what they are talking about...

I recommend HideMyAss VPN.
Just started using on OSX, very simple to configure: Install, run, choose Connect, choose a country from the list, done. No changes at all in System Preferences > Network. You can change countries anytime from the menu, great for testing your website from different locations.

This means I'm going to have to illegally download my porn the manual way? Hit and run on the sex shops in Soho? Great...
