Two people I know very well live there. They moved from the states a year or more ago from Chicago. If you are serious then email me and I can put you in contact with them. He's an architect and she's interior design.

I was planning to move there 3 years ago, but a good friend of mine that works for a company there told me not to because I will end up in jail in no time,
no booze, no sex (except for the wealthy), I couldn't care less about the drugs,
if you decide to move there, tone down all excesses and get ready for the hellish temperature

Dubai is tax free. That is the main reason people move there, so they can save for the deposit on a house in their own native land. If you're willing to work your ass off and have fuck all holidays for a few years why not? I have a few friends living their and they love it. Good for a young family that is over the whole 'lets go out and get wasted' lifestyle.

I've worked in Dubai, I was there for a few months in 2008. It is a shit hole. I hated just about every minute.
I have never spent time in a place with less soul.
If you have no issues with living in a city where a motorway goes right through the centre but there are not enough adequate crossing points for pedestrians; where there is next to zero art, music and culture in general; if you like living in oppressive heat; if you like a place that is faker than Willy Wonkers edible room then it could be the place for you.

I hear Abu Dhabi is a better place to live. Same no tax breaks, but a little bit more relaxed. I have never got Dubai, been there twice with work, and have mates who live and work there. Built it to attract westerners, but expect westerners to leave their 'ways' at home. Seems odd that anyone who likes flirting with women, drinking beers, and the rest would want to go anywhere near the place.
Also I heard that half the buildings will collapse soon. the heats so bad that the water in the wet concrete evaporates before it dries, leaving it very brittle. The big tower apparently is fucked because they didn't put the windows on quick enough and the core is sinking...

i would probably go to detroit before i moved to dubai but i have been to neither. i do know that i could easily get microbrews and drink them freely in public in detroit but in dubai probably not. so as long as you don't mind those kinds of things then you should be okay. good luck
