Yea, it doesn't make sense because the round bottles work in all the circular vending machines. I don't think Disney would approve of this because they need cylindrical containers to shoot from their rockets in Tomorrow Land.

The collapsible idea isnt something new. Most water bottles already do this. As far as sodas, they should catch on.

i believe this is a student project. its cool, but it will never see the light of day.
bottles need to be round (expecially soda bottles) because of they way they are filled and manufactured. they have to travel down conveyer belts and 'roll' along one another in the plant. for starters:
-cap cant be offset (because of how it is transported in the factory)
-sides cant be straight because the lables will rub eachother off when they go down the line
-soda bottles need to have a petaloid base because of the pressure inside the bottle and registration when filled.the bottles could be made, but would take much much longer to manufacture/fill/cap/ect. not worth it for a huge company like coca cola.

I believe the current shape of the bottle is actually optimized to break down more quickly to be re-utilized.

I saw this on Core77 yesterday - great idea really... but they won't do it. Heineken looked into doing this a while ago and actually produced square/rectangular bottles. Their sales dropped and then pulled the design when a focus group determined that the (more economical) bottles weren't 'pleasing to hold'
