Also a few more tips. I just fired this off to my little brother.
Shoes
Nothing ruins a suit like laziness. Start with the shoes. Shined and clean. Not lame sketchers or something. And don't try to be cheeky and wear chuck's. i have seen people do it. They're usually dirty and instead of looking unique you look pathetically average.I rock these with my suit
I recommend
http://www.florsheimbyduckiebrow…Socks
Spend money on a decent pair of socks. I can't cosign not wearing socks unless you're in a Thom Browne suit. I did see some guy wearing a lame calvin klien suit without sicks. It looked incongruent. Wear socks, personally I always wear bright color socks to give me a bit of edge.Shirt
Have it pressed! Buy a shirt, french cuffs, medium spread collar.NO TABS! Tabs were invented for polo players to keep their collars down. Do a little research on different types of shirts. Trust me like a suit and shoes, a little more money goes a long ways. Also having a shirt tailor made is by far cheaper then buying a 40 dollar nautica then having it tailored.Grooming
Shave. Enough of this big beard crap. And shave before you put on the shirt. ( I have a friend who literally put on his tux at his wedding, then shaved! He also tried to wear dirty chucks )Old Timey
If you don't settle arguments by fist fighting then don't dress all old timey. You know that girl in art school who dressed like louise brooks or the one that thought she was twiggy...yeah you're the male version.- I have some nice Allen Edmund shoesvitamins

you shouldn't be spending less than 1k if it's going to be your only suit. a $400 suits are generally fused instead of canvased and can bubble if your dry cleaners aren't careful.
personally, i recommend you go somewhere where they know how to fit you and will take the time to help you find the right suit for you. each brand has their own unique fit and style, so you should try on as my different ones as possible. my personal favorite brands are versace, dolce and gabbana, and zegna. tom ford is my favorite, but his suits are a little out of my league.
2-button and either black or dark grey for versatility.

I got a short modern cut suit in all black about a couple months ago. I went with the vest. all in I spent about $1200 and got sales & discounts in the range of $400, so $800 cash
i went with a black base to guarantee all my blacks matched.
i can put as many shirt/ tie combinations underneath that and the vest is there for formality if ever needed as time goes by.

heard this a while ago for the correct jacket length -
make sure that when the jacket is on with your arms hanging down by your side with fingers pointing downwards, the jacket should come to the base of your fingers.
worked for me.
POST PICS WHEN DONE :D

i've found the nicest suits for best value at Banana Republic, or they usually will have a few good places at a higher end outlet mall... places like Armani, HugoBoss, Calvin Klein, or BrooksBrothers for something conservative.

Get a cheap one from Zara - they're pretty good.

i would just have one custom made. i don't see why people won't spend money where it matters.
