I don't own a single suit, and I was wondering the basics about owning a suit.
Looking for something in the upper middle area. Not cheap, and not too expensive. How much does one have to spend for a impressive suit? What are some good brands?

You can get cheap tailoring from a Hong Kong based company called http://www.raja-fashions.com/ - They have some huge operation verging on sweatshop scale but it means that you can get high quality fabrics and a tailored fit at the same price as off the shelf crap.
Their main tailor flies around constantly doing fittings (in hotel rooms - yes it sounds dodgy but they are really professional). They have a list of cities he visits on the site and he's covering quite a few places in the US next month.
- yeah...contributing to sweatshops great ideadoesnotexist
- I didn't say it was a sweatshop, just that they have a large operation - with unfortunate wording.zr

From my experience...I e-mailed this to my little brother.
...With your body type, you will be fine in any suit...as long as it's not too expensive and black. ( I wouldn't spend more than $400 on theory or anything like that, any more you should go to brooks brothers or ralph lauren and have it properly made for you )
Everyman should have 1 black suit. I bought my first when I was 18. i still wear it. (Im 32) A black suit you can wear to a interview, funeral, wedding, meeting. Get a two button so when you get tired of it you can rock the blazer with jeans. Use this suit to learn about what works for you and doesn't. I have had quite a few people disagree with me on this, but I err to the side of caution.
Im a big guy, vents don't look right for me. Also slim fit...no way. But these are things I learned from the first suit. Now that I am older and have screwed a few things up my next suit will be custom made. Mainly because my body type is a-typical.
Never buy from Men's Warehouse. Never buy thick pinstripes. Don't buy those stupid mad men suits ( they're costumes )
Always wear cufflinks, Always Monogram your shirt, Always keep your shoulders loose enough to throw a jab and a cross. Pocket square on the left, hankerchief in the back pocket. Remember you give ladies the silk.
Love & Respect,
Your Brother Woody
- hahah why the fuck does everyone hate mens wearhouse?? let me in the know!404
- because they sell overpriced suits, and the tailors are hacks. The suit I got back had been hacked apart. The coats too long, shoulders too big, pants too short, etc. etc. It was my $650 mistake, I will never make it again.woodyBatts

All the major (read: pricey, but good) brands have different cuts.
Worth finding "your" brand, and the cuts that suits you. Go, try them all on. It's an investment after all.Yes, different cuts sounds corny, but think of it as, say, a haircut. Just like there are some haircuts that just suits some heads there is suits that suits (eh eh) bodies. Find yours and stick to that brand.
Getting one tailored from scratch, sure, if you can afford it. But having it tailored doesn't necessarily mean "more stylish" or "right for you". But indeed, it would fit like a glove.
My advice for "upper middle", which have already been mention, is to alter a suit to your measures.Another advice is to get 2 pair of slack and have them both altered at the same time. You'll be wearing them out if you're in them every day. Put them on rotation and let them breath for a day at least.
Go easy on the dry cleaning, and especially the starch, but do go a couple of times every year.
I'd write more, and better, but I'm drunk and just realized I shouldn't be posting.

woodyBatts, can't tell if you're serious or not (I touched on being drunk in my post). Some good things in there like not going for thick chalks (save if you are a gangster), but also some major mistakes like the -black- suit.
Don't go black. Unless it's
- for a funeral
- you're a teen graduating
- it's a tuxGo dark grey. Or navy. Not black.

- Serious, but talking to my little brother in an email. I vote for black for versatility. However I cosign what you are saying.woodyBatts
