Well, I know that there a lot of Brooklynites here, however if you can afford it, I would recommend living in Manhattan, at least in the beginning.
A lot of expats gravitate towards the West Village as its a bit West Londony (chaotic streets, leafy etc). I lived there for a year and loved it.
- If you want to make your money stretch, renting property in Brooklyn is the best place to start without an entire drownjteore

Where in the city are you planning on living? That will determine your monthly nut. As long as you find a job or some sort of income (which isn't necessarily easy these days), you'll be alright. Good luck.
- 1+BR in accessible brooklyn areas span $1200-$2000 monthjonturi
- Maybe Brooklyn..as long as its secure.. have a budget of about $2500 a month for rent..RumperChunk
- email me if u want. my friend does rentals in Ft. Greene area. lots of nice places.jonturi

i would just say give it more than a year, even if you hate it. it can be rough to settle here and make the city your own. i know more than a few people who were so ready to leave/hated things, but stuck with it past the first year and now they love it here. because it's such a big place, sometimes it takes longer to discover the right job, neighborhood, social circle, etc.
- good advice.. im from nyc and i barely touched upon all of that and everyday is discoverye-pill

my advice is to be sure you are going to live in an area that you can call home. I lived in astoria (queens) for about 2 years... and hated nyc. Once I moved to brooklyn I started to really see what this city has to offer. I've lived in both williamsburg and now in greenpoint, love both of them.
If you going to use a broker try using one from the area you want to live in, they will know apartments that may not be listed with bigger agencies.

I moved out here having never been to the city, knowing no one, and with $1000 and now I've been here almost 8 years.
You've been here before, you like it, you have enough cash to last you 6 months. As long as you and the Mrs. are proactive in the job hunt, you'll be just fine.

I'm really interested in moving out to NY too, but getting a visa to work in the U.S seems nigh-on impossible from what I've read (I'm a UK citizen). Those of you who are moving (or who've already made the move) from the UK, how did you do it?

Any issues with your VISAs? I'm looking at moving out to NYC myself to be with my girlfriend (who's a New Yorker) and to work but huge pain trying to get a VISA! Would welcome any tips/advice from you...

Thanks all for the advice, and keep it coming. Seems everyone is very positive and helpful for what is a very big step. When we get there, we'll throw a QBN party for y'all... so we can trade stories and hook up some collaborations...

Jobs are becoming more available. Housing is opening up. Its a good time to move here, as long as the economy gets better.

I moved here 3 months ago....I love it...I don't know who has moved here and hasn't ...thank god for the green card lottery:)

I moved here last July and have no regrets.
The first few weeks will be pretty crazy, no doubt- but once you realize you only have to deal with a small part of the city every day, you will be fine.
I found moving to Brooklyn to start very easy. Brooklyn is much more quiet and a nice escape after a busy day. Williamsburg/Greenpoint is very comfortable. Manhattan is very confusing for 1st timers.. (exp. 1st time to a big city, maybe moving from london wont be much difference)

Are you already sorted with a visa? Seems like the biggest obstacle and requires sponsorship etc. Working holiday visas are a good way to try a place out for a few months but USA doesn't seem to offer this.

i moved a year and half ago. Best move I could have ever done. NYC is great in all aspects. Work, connections, life and so on. I think you'll enjoy it here. I live in greenpoint, brooklyn and love it. But there's other great areas in BK that you might enjoy as well.
- I live in GP too!Etype
- rock on! I think a few others on here live in GP too.Audria

make sure this is something she really wants to do, and not something your just selling to loudly to hear dissension.
