I wanted a nicer place with cheaper rent in SF so I moved to Brooklyn.

Also, rents have risen a stupid fucking amount in the last year. Like 30% or something for most neighborhoods. Stupid good local economy and limited residential.

Try a 2 mile radius of Buena Vista Park :)

Damn! Haven't logged in here in forever. Reading back on this old thread...most of the info is spot on. Thanks for the info that let me move/survive in this city for almost 3 years now!

Sell your car.
Sublet an apartment for 1-3 months in the city.
Buy a bike and/or fastpass.
Find a really dope place that has everything you want.**you can do this now.. the rental market isn't as cutthroat as it was a few years ago

for temporary living check the apartments on fillmore nearby safeway. rent is like 1400 for a studio and you are in a building (might not be advisable if you are worried about earthquakes). you'll have to PM me for the name of the complex. you'd be super close to japantown. safeway is right across from the street. 15 minutes from union square by bus. and fillmore has good food. lotta people i met were there for 6 months lease til they found a more suitable living spot.

It will be impossible to get an apartment here unless you're here. IMPOSSIBLE. And if somehow you manage to swing this somehow, you will be disappointed because the landlord will be taking advantage.
Come to SF, find someplace with weekly/monthly rates and go from there. Put your shit in storage while you look. You will be able to find something quickly if you have a week or two to dedicate to looking. Also have all your info and money ready and you show up on time.
- yeah, pretty much what i am expecting. are storage units easy to come by? or more important not insanely priced?spellcheck

On the off chance you speak Chinese, you can get what you are looking for in regard to size and price. There are loads of apartments in the Chinese paper.
- I don't, unfortunately. Although it does seem like it would come in handy :/spellcheck
- and you can get better hooker rates lolFredMcWoozy

yeah, i actually checked out berkley recently. it seems nice (the craftsman/cottage houses are rad) but it's just not IN the city, you know. there is just something about it that says "yeah, this is cool and nice, but fuck...now i have to take a 30 minute train ride to get to the city."
At the same time, I'm thinking "Oh shit, I want to be in the heart of SF but don't want to spend over $1600...and I want parking place. I'm fucked."
hahaha what to do??
- biking is a viable alternative to owning a car here. especially the mission & soma.kpl

SpellCheck. I don't how weird you're but Berkley is actually really cool. You might consider digging around over there.
- +1. I live in Berkeley and love it. Very bikeable. I pay $725 for a great cottage.e-wo

i would suggest just to move here, find a monthly-rate hotel and them make your decision. you will be hardset to find a quality place without the landlord seeing that your eyes don't have the 10,000 mile meth stare.

you can't really look for september until august. it's not that hard, but it helps to be here. I see lots of for rent signs in windows, which was rare just a couple years ago.

STAY AWAY FROM OAKLAND AND RICHMOND.- amen to that :)spellcheck
- Oak does have some good rental prices but damn....It is better to be local and live there.FredMcWoozy

you should check the Marin Area, The North Bay and some in the South Bay. If you can stay close to the BART you can travel in and out of the city at your convenience.
- yeah, the north bay seems nice and chill, but doesn't seem to have a lot or rentals in the area :/spellcheck
- SF is hurting for renters. Check out the fillmore center. You might find deals there.FredMcWoozy
- but yeah, def. need to stay close to the BART. Good point, and something i need to write on my must-haves listspellcheck
- cool. will check fillmore center out. thanks for the tip/info. much appreciated.spellcheck

Bump.
So the time is drawing near! It is set for September! Does anyone have any links or connections with some places out there? :)I've been searching craigslist and numerous other sites 'till no end...all the shit on there either seems so worthless/shady (based on what others have said here), or just isn't available that far in advance (september).
Bah, it all seems so hard...but really, it shouldn't be, right?

I moved down here 6 months ago from Seattle, live in Oakland and work in Hayes Valley. The apartment is pretty nice for cheap ($1350/month for a good-size 1br with a dining room and a large 'closet' that I use as an office, where I'm typing this now), and I live 2 buildings down from some good friends and right below some others. And with all of that good stuff, my wife and I are considering moving into San Francisco when our lease is up and paying hundreds more for what will undoubtedly be a smaller/possibly crappier place. Weird!
There's something to be said for actually living in the neighborhoods in which you want to hang out, especially when the last BART to the East Bay runs at like 12:30 on the weekends.

Most of my friends who moved there got good deals through other friends. Try and make contacts when possible, its the best way to get a good deal as most of the great places are usually hooked up between a friend moving out and another moving in.

we have a 2br apt that is on scott and hayes prob 700sf, love the location but the apt has thin walls/everything is old. we pay $2100/month.
we are moving to 15th ave and fulton, further out and more quiet, prob 1500sf paying $2500/mo
all of the neighborhoods are great in sf, the tenderloin is super sketchy, here is proof:
http://content.stamen.com/san_fr…the tenderloin is the area that has tons and tons of crime dots.
a lot of coworkers live in eastbay(oakland) and don't seem to mind it but who knows, not me.

my friend was attacked outside his house and almost beaten to death near lake merritt for no reason about a month ago. you can risk it, might not happen to you, but thats what my friend said 8 years ago. something will happen to you at some point, its just a matter of playing the odds.
