I moved down here 6 months ago from Seattle, live in Oakland and work in Hayes Valley. The apartment is pretty nice for cheap ($1350/month for a good-size 1br with a dining room and a large 'closet' that I use as an office, where I'm typing this now), and I live 2 buildings down from some good friends and right below some others. And with all of that good stuff, my wife and I are considering moving into San Francisco when our lease is up and paying hundreds more for what will undoubtedly be a smaller/possibly crappier place. Weird!
There's something to be said for actually living in the neighborhoods in which you want to hang out, especially when the last BART to the East Bay runs at like 12:30 on the weekends.
