http://www.944.com/top9/?id=96Today's Top 9 Possible Band-Naming Trends Spotted on SXSW Lineup
1. Space-Related

Nothing says "tight-pants hipster rock" like a band name with punctuation marks!? You Say Party! We Say Die!, Question?, Ze!, Everybody Was in the French Resistance . . .Now!4. The Thes
It's a classic rock and roll formula: The word “The” plus noun equals band name: The Muffs, The Pharmacy, The Minutes, The Coast, and at least 500 others5. Run-Ons
Because every band name is a run-on in the internet browser address bar: Moneypenny, 65daysofstatic, MoJoe, JoiStaRR, ytcracker, BettySoo, ChocQuibTown,6. Band Name, Or Novella?
Oh, you're in a band? What's the name? And you've also been working on your MFA for ten years? No kidding, we never would have guessed . . . And So I Watch you From Afar, The Low Frequency in Stereo, The Russian Futurists, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso UFO, Samantha is the Highway Girl, Here We Go Magic, Choir of Young Believers7. Lions and Tigers and Bears, and . . .YAWN
Owls, Owl City and now the freaking Autumn Owls? Aren't musicians supposed to be creative? Copycats. Oh, hey there's another lame animal-related band name if anyone wants it, feel free. Toy Horses, Butterfly Explosion, Lions of Tsavo, Bison BC, Unicorn Kid, Frightened Rabbit, Little Fish, Lions, Peanut Butter Wolf, Wild Yaks, The Yellow Dogs, Papier Tigre, 60 Tigres8. The Color Black
Who wants to bet that these bands all have skulls on their album art? Black Feelings, Black Spiders, Black Eyed Dog, The Black9. Clothes
We like this trend. It's zippy and fun and it makes us want to go shopping. Little Black Dress, Modern Skirts, The Coathangers, Diamond Rings, The Uglysuit, Cocktail Slippers, The Veils

Some of these bands have been around for years. When did these 'trends' start exactly? The Russian Futurists formed in 2000; You Say Party! We Say Die! in 2004. "The" band names became a joke 5 years ago, culminating in the Sum 41 video in which Will Sasso (as record exec) rebrands them as "The Sums".

Having "The..." in the name is not a trend, just a consequence of the English language. Pick a decade:
The Donnas
The The
The Pixies
The New York Dolls
The Who
The Coasters
The Andrew Sisters
and onward back in time.....The End.

Portugal. The Man
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
!!!
SUNN O)))- SUNN O))) is taken from the amp. doesn't really applyBaths
- I know, but it still applies IMO. Why not? They could have just named it Sun or Sunn, since they really named it because of Earth.ismith
- Earth, using Sunn amps was just a lucky bonus.ismith
- Also SUNBEARS!ismith
- Not a lucky bonus... Sunn amps have amazing tone, thats the reason...fresnobob
- They were originally called Mars. They wanted to name it Sun because of the band Earth, the fact that they used Sunn ampsismith
- Sunn amps is why they decided to spell it the same way. It was a lucky coincidence ;)ismith
- It was because Earth used Sunn amps that they started using them too, since they were a cover band originally.ismith
