I think its a way to organize a lot of cooks in one kitchen:
At Nike, shit rolled down hill like this:VP of Brand Design
Creative Director
Design Director
Art Director
Senior Designer
Graphic Designer 2
Graphic Designer 1
Intern

I've always thought of design director as the role of creative director for a firm that doesn't do writing, just pure design.

Did a lot of research on this when I go the title...for a whole 3 months. it means u may be in line for a junior creative director position but they don't want your head to blow up and they want to test you out. Design director is a creative director and should be used to apply to someone directing a design company, dept, team whatever. in an ad agency a design director should be above an art director but beware, the title means nothing. the only thing that matters is what your boss makes everyone else recognize and support. from what I have seen design director is used in fashion design settings mostly and some in digital design. I would definitely have stayed at art director knowing what I do now. biggest mistake of my career.
my biggest recommendation, sit your boss down and MAKE HIM?HER DEFINE YOUR ROLE. If he won't, if they say we want you to define it and work with others in the company to operationalize your role, respectfully decline and ask to stay at our current level until there is a very clear and necessary role to be filled.
titles can be a real drag.
