What do you think - if you were to put up two different domains and link from one to the other, would that actually help your SEO? Or would Google pick up on the fact that you own them both somehow?

people do that all the time for the benefits of SEO. you can set the domains up under different IP addresses if you want to be completely safe, but I'm not sure how important of a factor that really is these days.
one-way links are better for SEO than link exchanges. So set up a second domain with some relevant content and link from there back to your primary site, but not the other way around.

Yeah, I've heard different theories about whether that really does work and how much info Google has at their fingertips. Some say using different IPs is necessary. Others claim Google actually have access to the info about who owns which domain.

yeah google having access to the whois has always been something I've wondered about too.
But as a rule of thumb I don't think it will *hurt* you at all to have 2 sites as long as none of them are overtly spammy in any way. I think in most experiences you should get a slight benefit, but it may not be worth it depending on how much effort it takes to set up a second site.

I think google also works on a system of relevancy. Linking to "relevant" pages whether internal or external should also bring up your page ranking.
So if I'm looking for cats, that are linked to theatre pages, then we're talking about the play, verses linking to dog pages, would determine the parent page is about animals.

If you have two domains and one website - you'll be marked negatively by Google. They'll think you're trying to game the system.
Use a 301 redirect from one of the domains to the other.

I'm talking about two different sites that link to each other but both happen to be owned by the same person. That wouldn't be marked negatively since there's nothing wrong with simply linking to another site you run.
What I wonder though is, at what level does Google "collect intelligence?" Do they look at the IP being the same and discount the link because of that? Do they know that I registered both domains at Godaddy? etc
