I hitch-hiked through Europe for 6 months last year and didn't have a single bad experience. I have often found that the people who tell you not to do it are the ones who have never tried it. The people who have will tell you that it was a great. In Leiden, NL i met a kid who had been on the road for 14 months. He hitched everywhere and estimated over 1,000 rides total in that time. He didn't a single negative thing to say.

Of course there is risk involved but its rarely anything more than a boring conversation or bad driver. If you exercise good judgement and follow a few simple guidelines you'll be fine. The world isn't the big scary place the media portrays it as. Not everyone is a murderer just driving around looking for the perfect opportunity. In fact, the driver is probably more scared of you than you are of him/her.

Anybody ever pick up hitchhikers?

The last hitchhiker I picked up had an eye patch and looked exactly like Mikhail (I think that was his name?) from Lost. Nice guy, a little older. I knew where he was headed and he even paid for some gas. I'v now got a porch to sleep on whenever I'm a little further upstate.
- Did he have a cutlass, and a hook hand, too?boobs
- lol, just learned what a cutlass was 3 hours ago. slightly ironic - don't think i've ever seen it usedpersona_non_grata

I got extremely drunk in austin many years back, crashed my car right in front of the capital on congress ave. in the middle of the night. no cops were around so I ditched the car and walked back to the bar until it closed. then two bearded drunk hippies in a rusted out el camino picked me up, there was no room in the cab so I sat in back as an 75 lb chow kept growling and barking at me for 30 minutes. other than passing out later, i was unscathed.
- so... how did walking feel once you woke up... ;Dismith
