Do you already play acoustic guitar? or do you have literally no experience.
If you're starting from scratch then start on an acoustic. If you start on electric then acoustic will be harder down the line because electrics are inherently easier to play.
If you're sure you really want an electric then get a strat, really can't go wrong with one. I suggest a mexican made fender. They're great for the money and very versatile. Also, get a decent amp, I think amps are almost more important than the guitar. Try not to go for a transistor based amp if possible, get a small 5 or 10 watt tube amp (it will be much louder than you think if it's a good one).

i wanna be joe satriani or steve vai lol

For a great cheap guitar, get a Dan Electro from the 90s. I got one used for $120 and I like it better than my $300 fender. The neck is great and it stays in tune.

If you wanna be vai or satriani, get an ibanez, but be warned they are super easy to play so if you learn on one, you will literally never be able to play anyone else's guitar.
I have 2 ibanezes from when I was a teenager and used to shred. But not I pretty much exclusively play a battered old strat, which you really have to dig in to play. makes you a better player all round
- isnt easy to play a good thing?trooperbill
- not at first no. you'll learn to play in a sloppy way. you learn to drive in a basic car, not a fast sports car. same deal with guitarsBaskerviIle

im heavy handed so does that matter?
*bashes keyboard with fingers like steel lol*
- just don't get super high frets or a scallop board and you'll be fine ;)ismith

6 strings are good. Sometimes 12, or 4. Although it doesnt seem to bother Seasick Steve much - he only uses 3 that are out of tune.

If you like Vai or Satch, definitely go with a Strat as your first guitar. It's the most generic body (but in a good way), excellent balance, very ergonomic, and it's a perfect introduction to all those Ibanezes and other super-strat types, just without insane amounts of gain that you don't want as a beginner.
- +1 I vote strat all the way, great place to startBaskerviIle

Check out the Agile brand sold by rondomusic.com (also see agileguitarforum.com)
I have the AL2800 (Les Paul knockoff) and it blows any highend Epiphone out of the water and is a all around great player. Best bang for the buck guitar I have played.

- I have one of these... hahaismith
- I hacked the shit out of it thoughismith
- dual humbuckers, locking tuners, custom electronics, killswitch, floyd (uninstalled it though)ismith
- humbuckers??? why???ok_not_ok
- an experiment. plus it's very handy for my SUNN antics. my next single coil guitar will be handbuilt...ismith

whats a scallop?
- see how the wood is filed out between the frets in the pic above? that's scallopingismith
- bends are easier and such but so is pressing out of tune. it also has a distinct sound when you've gotten used to playing itismith
- some, steve vai for example, only scallop the top (21-24) frets so they can get the high bends easierismith
- but unless your a blackmore or malmsteen freak, probably want to steer clear while you're a beginner.ismith

I went through the same thing a few years ago.
I found a 1 year old Gibson Les Paul Studio with a VOX amp all with the sales receipts, boxes and tags for less than the guitar was worth alone on craigslist.
I bought a few books and DVDs and picked it up a few times but never spent the time really learning it.
Right now it's just sitting in the corner of my home office making me look like a total poser.
So my advice is do some research than hit up craigslist or pawn shops for a good quality guitar that you can sell or pawn for nearly what you paid for it when you lose interest in a few months.

so a Vintage VS6 with a vo amp will set me back around £180 which seems fair...
the squire's any good as theyre well cheap.
- 1 in 10 Squiers are decent. 1 in 100 are pretty good.1 in 1000 are damn good (for the price).ismith

I had an old Japanese Squier Strat which was amazing, both sound and build quality, and a Japanese Squier Telecaster which was a total piece of s**t and sounded like a bag of spanners.
The moral here is "play before you buy"—and if you can't play yet, get someone who can to go with you: they'll know a dodgy guitar when they play it.

I had a dream last night that my dog chewed all the knobs off my Gibson and didn't noticed it until I was in a rehearsal space with Modest Mouse and Jet.
I guess it wouldn't matter to much with those two bands though.

just bought a second hand vintage v6 from amazon for £45+p&p... amazing lol.
