...says mobile developer. The long, detailed and faintly angry blogpost doesn't pull any punches:
"The iPhone has become an obsession. If we don't pay attention, we'll have a mobile web that only works on the iPhone. And then we'll have the real mobile web that wasn't made by us and doesn't give a shit about web standards and best practices."

Internet Explorer 6 was only bad because it was fucking incompetent and left to stagnate. To compare that turd to WebKit even in the slightest is a sign of a fucking idiot.- he doesn't seem to be talking about safari/webkit, he's kinda not-wrong, but it's a pretty shitty analogy.kingsteven

Also maybe if Nokia, Microsoft, SE, Blackberry, Google, etc had been even remotely competent at providing a usable mobile browsing experience then maybe we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.
iPhone is number 1 because it's not utter dog shit to browse with. Unlike every single phone before it.

He has a point, everyone is making iphone apps, or 'sites for the iphone'.
As a designer/developer you should really be covering all bases with design.Although throwing your toys out the pram like that is a bit uncalled for.

I read this yesterday, and I think it's bullshit.
It's a decent argument - and many of the points make sense - but, an essential initial point is ignored. Safari is a standards compliant browser, IE6 never was.
The point for me, is that the iPhone browser tries to bring a desktop browser experience to a mobile device - which is why it provides such an effective and compelling experience. Other phones don't do this as well (with the exception of Opera's mobile browser perhaps).
Maybe development for the iPhone, does mean that other smart phone browsers might be ignored - but only in the same way that developing for the _desktop_ means that other smart phone browsers might be ignored.
I think the Guardian is actually a bit out of line here - they're basically re-blogging. It's sloppy journalism imo.
I think the quirksmode author is putting personal annoyance above reason.

"QuirksMode.org is the prime source for browser compatibility information on the Internet" and immature LiveJournal quality rants.Fair enough rant all you want but leave it on Twitter, IRC, forums and don't smear it all over your once respectable website.
