C4D rigging question

Doing some dedicated training in character rigging and animation.
So I've modeled this rudimentary robot guy. I've spent the day learning about joints, IK, and the weight tool, but I am seeing some differing opinions, in that this wouldn't be the best way to rig/animate a mechanical device, since joints act as deformers.
I also recently upgraded to 11.5, so I'm not seeing any tutorials addressing this at all. The training materials I do have are either too general, or specific (covering organic characters).Any ideas?

i google it for you, the first two threads from c4d cafe seem to address the same issue

I'm already aware of those, thanks.
It does and it doesn't address it. It's an already in-depth conversation covering topics that appear to have been updated since the C4D version they are discussing. But I am re-reading it.

yo E!!
i know you asked for C4D and all.. but here is a Modo Rigging A Character Tutorial..
its discussed on how to rig in modo.. [10 minute tutorial]
http://www.luxology.com/trymodo/… ‹‹‹ try the demo.. its dope!!or..
Cinema 4d ghetto chaR setup Demo 720p [20 minutes tutorial]
- after watching the C4D way i am very happy to have Modo. that looks like its double time..e-pill
- also after 30 days of using modo everyday.. and it just expired yesterday .. i learned!!e-pill
- i felt Modo is so easy to pick up and also you can set the prefs to act like any 3D app..e-pill
- ...but that is how you rig in C4D and Modo..e-pill

i've often wondered this as well. the handful of times i tried to get my head around rigging mech objects, the weight tool had to paint on values as either fully deformed or not; no grey inbetween values.
i think the thing here is to make sure that for each section, you have two bones (one unique joint) so that the different pieces move as independently as possible.

Thanks for the resources. And thanks to CyBrain for the email. Will post more info once an answer emerges.
Yeah there is a disconnect (for me anyway) between how one efficiently rigs a mechanical object vs. an organic one.

Update:
Interesting (and recent, at only a week old) discussion on the topic of mech rigging:
http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/index…This cat has some serious chops and offers up both tutorials and plugins he's developed himself:
http://www.cactus3d.com/Might need to put the robot aside for the moment and get comfortable enough with a more organic character since the joints and deformations all apply.
Funny, I really thought that rigging a little robot guy would be the easier way to start.

This has promise:
http://www.c4dportal.com/cactusd…Contains both a video tut and project file for rigging a mechanical bull.

didn't know so many of you guys are robot designers. I would love to see your work. Please share. For other robot designers such as me would be very happy to know there are other nters like me. Would love to see what you guys can do.

That Modo tut was really interesting, e. Naturally, the functionality doesn't totally translate to C4D, but there are some concepts I am going to play with and see if I can make this easier.
Btw, I am in NO way a robot designer. No talent or chops for that. I just made a very basic little dude just for the purposes of learning about rigging, etc.
Here is my sad sad little man.

Remember with a 3D application, you don't always need to make use of the skin deformation tools.
If you have a rigid body which you'd like to rig, I've found you can often forget about the standard skinning / vertex assigning tools.
Instead, I've been able to set constraints to tie the position of the body parts to the bones of the skeleton. This might work for you too.

That's a great point, lukus. And I think I am zeroing in on that a bit.
This thread has some good insight as well:
http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/index…Dude posted a project file for a robot arm. Picking the hiearchy apart and his use of controllers is very educational.

yo E.. i know again.. im on the Modo tip.. but in Modo, you can set the navigation prefs to match any other 3D app. so in turn the rigging process can be seamless..
here is a vid for it..
http://content2.luxology.com/mod…you should download the demo and make your magic happen..
http://www.luxology.com/trymodo/…if i can learn what i did in 30 days, you can too!!
- Very interesting. I will check that our fo sho. :)harlequino
